DON’T BE AFRAID:  BELIEVE

MARK 5: 35-43

I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord:  not death or life… nor any other thing that is created.

Romans 8:38-39 (CEB)

            What a surprise it would have been to hear those words of Jesus! Talitha cum! The picture of grief and pain would have moved anyone, grief at the loss of a daughter, who, judging from the Aramaic expression, would have been at least an adolescent. But here, as in so many other occasions, the exhortation Jesus gives is to not be afraid, but believe.

            Although death is something natural, its impact affects us in a unique way; it is the end of physical life which we cling to so much—it is the only one we know! Death implies separation and ending of all earthly possibilities, whereby we always ask ourselves: what will we find on the other side?  

            The Bible presents the reality of death as something that happened due to human transgressions. Sin entered the world as a violation of the divine will and carries a connotation that leaves us with the taste of punishment and condemnation. But look from the angle of Jesus in this story—death is a transition, a “sleeping.” In place of lamenting what can be seen, as St. Francis of Assisi said, how the “dead” sister is the necessary step for our definitive identification with God, the beginning of our eternity. 

            In these times of so much death and the pain it causes, let’s hold on to the words of Jesus:  don’t be afraid, believe.

 

Prayer: Thank you Lord for teaching us that nothing, not even death, can separate us from your love.  Amen.

NO TEMAS, CREE

Marcos 5:35-43

Por lo cual estoy seguro que ni la muere ni la vida… ni ninguna otra cosa creada, podrá separarnos del amor de Dios

Romanos 8: 38-39

            ¡Qué impresionantes debieron sonar aquellas palabras pronunciadas por Jesús! ¡Talita cumi! El cuadro de luto y dolor conmovería a cualquiera, la pérdida de una hija que, al juzgar por la expresión aramea, sería apenas una adolescente. Pero en esta, como en tantas otras ocasiones, la exhortación que hace Jesús es a no temer sino a creer.

            Aunque la muerte es algo natural, su impacto nos afecta de un modo único; es la terminación de la vida física a la que tanto nos aferramos ¡es la única que conocemos! La muerte implica separación y terminación de toda posibilidad terrena, por lo cual siempre nos preguntamos: ¿más allá, qué hay?

            La Biblia presenta la realidad de la muerte como algo acaecido debido a la transgresión humana, el pecado entró en el mundo como usurpación de la voluntad divina y ello acarrea una connotación que nos ha dejado un sabor a castigo y a condena. Pero visto desde el ángulo de Jesús en esta historia, es una transición, un “dormir”. En lugar de lamentarla puede ser vista, como dijera San Francisco de Asís, como la “hermana muerte”, el paso necesario para nuestra identificación definitiva con Dios, el comienzo de nuestra eternidad.

            En estos tiempos que tanta muerte y dolor han causado, aferrémonos a las palabras de Jesús: no temas, cree.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor por enseñarnos que nada, ni aún la muerte, nos separa de tu amor. Por Jesús. Amén.
