WHEN THERE IS FAITH THERE IS PEACE

Mark 4:35-41

Why do you fear so? How is it that you do not have faith?

            This account of Jesus calming the storm appears in greater detail in Mark, the shortest gospel. It seems that the evangelist attached great importance to what happened there. Jesus is sleeping in the best place in the boat when a storm strikes and his fearful disciples wake him saying, “Do you not care that we are sinking?” Jesus reproaches them for their lack of faith, and immediately rebukes the storm which calms down completely.

            If we take the story literally, we are left with one more example of God’s power to act on nature; but if we apply its meaning to our lives, then it becomes much more important.

            As in the story, the storms of life surprise us on countless occasions, when we are unprepared to face them. When one looks at the wind and the waves, one begins to sink, as happened to Peter on that occasion when he wanted to walk on the water toward Jesus. Only when by faith, instead of anxiety and fear, we look to God and the power with which he sustains us does peace come to us, that which according to Paul surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus (Phil 4:7). When there is faith there is peace.

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, may we remember how Jesus taught us to call you “Abba,” in that intimate and totally trustworthy childish language. We want to live in peace with faith and you. Amen.

CUANDO HAY FE, HAY PAZ

Marcos 4:35-41

¿Por qué tienen tanto miedo? ¿Cómo es que no tienen fe?

            Este relato de Jesús calmando la tormenta aparece con mayores detalles en Marcos, el evangelio más corto. Tal parece que el evangelista concedió gran importancia a lo allí sucedido. Jesús se halla durmiendo en el mejor lugar de la barca cuando sobreviene una tormenta y los discípulos, asustados, le despiertan diciendo: -¿no te importa que nos estamos hundiendo? Jesús les reprocha su falta de fe y enseguida reprende la tormenta, que se calma totalmente.

            Si tomamos el relato solo en forma literal, nos quedamos con un ejemplo más del poder de Dios para actuar sobre la naturaleza, pero si lo aplicamos en significado a nuestra vida, entonces cobra mucha mayor importancia. Como en el relato, las tormentas de la vida nos sorprenden en un sinnúmero de ocasiones, desprevenidos, sin sentirnos preparados para enfrentarlas. Cuando se mira el viento y las olas, comenzamos a hundirnos, como le sucedió a Pedro en aquella ocasión que quiso andar sobre el mar rumbo a Jesús. Solo cuando por la fe miramos a Dios y el poder con el que nos sostiene, en vez de ansiedad y temor nos llega la paz, esa que al decir de Pablo sobrepasa todo entendimiento y guarda nuestros corazones y pensamientos en Cristo Jesús (Fil 4.7). Cuando hay fe, hay paz.

 

Oración: Permite Padre amado que recordemos cómo Jesús nos enseñó a llamarte “Abba”, en ese lenguaje infantil íntimo y de total confianza. En la fe en Ti, deseamos vivir en paz. Amén.
