TO LIVE BY FAITH, WITH FAITH

Romans 4:13-25

When it was beyond hope, Abraham had faith….

            In this passage Paul affirms that the faith of Abraham was counted as righteousness (vs. 22).  He returns here to an argument that validates his reasoning, based on the text of Habakkuk 2:4: “the righteous will live by faith”. 

            I dare to affirm that the life of faith that pleases God continues on determined patterns, not as strict compliance with regulations, but as the spontaneous response to know that which pleases God. In a simple way he presents the golden rule: do to your neighbor as you would want them to do to you. To take faith as a shield, so as not to feel “tied” to the law, or in order to wield it as a good that can be possessed, is mistaken. The example of Abraham is very concrete and guides us as a model; when things seem to be meaningless, the word of God is believed and lived in expectation, because God is faithful and rewards those who wait in God. 

            In the midst of anxieties that come from current times, the uncertainty of a new year which is coming, the believer should rise in faith and live it with full certainty of what this faith means, saying with Paul: “I know in whom I have believed,” but faith is not so much to believe “in” God as it is to believe “to” God. This is our challenge, to live by faith, with faith. 

 

Prayer: Lord, we want to trust in your promises, to believe in spite of everything, that your will may always be fulfilled.  We wait in You, Amen.

VIVIR POR LA FE, CON FE

Rom 4:13-25

Contra toda esperanza, Abraham creyó….

Romanos 4:18a

            En este pasaje Pablo afirma que la fe de Abraham le fue contada como justicia (vrs. 22). Retoma aquí un argumento que valida su razonamiento, basado en el texto de Habacuc 2:4: “el justo por la fe vivirá”.

            Me atrevo a afirmar que la vida de fe que agrada a Dios sigue determinados patrones, pero no como cumplimiento estricto de normativas sino como la respuesta espontánea a reconocer lo que agrada a Dios. De modo sencillo lo presenta la llamada regla de oro: haz con tu prójimo lo que quieres que hagan contigo. Tomar la fe como escudo, sea para no sentirse “atado” a ley, o para esgrimirla como un bien que se posee, es equivocado. El ejemplo de Abraham es muy concreto y nos debe guiar como modelo; cuando las cosas parecen no tener sentido, la palabra de Dios se cree y se vive en expectativa, porque Dios es fiel y premia a quienes esperan en Él.

            En medio de las ansiedades que generan los tiempos actuales, la incertidumbre de un año que se aproxima, el creyente debe alzarse en la fe y vivirla con plena certidumbre de lo que esa fe significa, decir con Pablo: “yo sé a quién he creído”, pues la fe no es tanto creer “en” Dios como creer “a” Dios. Ese es nuestro reto, vivir por la fe, con fe.

 

Oración: Señor, queremos confiar en tus promesas, creer a pesar de todo, pues tu voluntad siempre se cumple. En Ti esperamos. Amén.
