AND I, WHO AM I?

Luke  9:18-24

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.”

            The Christian faith goes beyond knowing what others believe. It demands that we really believe. When Jesus asks “But who do you say that I am?” he is also talking to us.

            Jesus told his disciples that they should not say that he was the Christ because at that time they did not fully understand the meaning of this statement. Everyone continued to hope for the Messiah to come as a conquereing King. However, Jesus as Messiah would still have to suffer, to be rejected by the leaders, die and be raised. When the disciples saw all these things happening to Jesus, they would understand the reason for the coming of the Messiah. Only then were they prepared to preach the good news to the larger world.

            The Christian who follows his Lord imitates his life and obeys his commands. Is it any wonder that Jesus demands we take up our cross to follow him? The one who wants to follow Jesus has to be ready to deny himself, take up his cross and give his life. No material thing can make up for the loss of eternal life. Jesus’ disciples must not use their earthly life for their own pleasure, but rather wisely use it by serving God and neighbors.

 

Prayer: Lord, may the most important thing in our lives be following you, for having you we have everything. Amen.

¿Y YO QUIEN SOY?

Lucas  9:18-24

Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy?  les preguntó. Y Pedro le respondió: Eres el Mesías de Dios.

Lucas 9:20

            La fe cristiana va más allá del conocimiento de lo que otros creen. Demanda que realmente creamos. Cuando Jesús pregunta: ¿Y ustedes, quién dicen que soy?, también se refiere a nosotros.

            Jesús dijo a sus discípulos que no debían decir que era el Cristo porque en ese momento no entendían del todo el significado de esta declaración. Todos seguían esperando al Mesías que vendría como un Rey conquistador. Pero Jesús, como el Mesías, tendría aún que sufrir, lo rechazarían los líderes, moriría y resucitaría. Cuando los discípulos vieran suceder todas estas cosas en Jesús, comprenderían el porqué de la venida del Mesías. Solo entonces estarían preparados para predicar las buenas nuevas alrededor del mundo.

            El cristiano que sigue a su Señor imita su vida y obedece sus mandamientos. La gente está dispuesta a pagar un alto precio por algo que valora. ¿Sorprende que Jesús demandara tomar nuestra cruz para seguirle? El que quiera seguir a Jesús debe estar dispuesto a negarse a sí mismo, llevar su cruz y dar su vida. Ninguna cosa material compensa la pérdida de la vida eterna. Los discípulos de Jesús no deben usar su vida terrenal para su propio placer, sino que deben sabiamente ocuparla sirviendo a Dios y a los demás.

 

Oración: Señor, que lo más importante en nuestras vidas sea seguirte, porque teniéndote a Ti lo tenemos todo. Amén.
