OUR DAILY BREAD

Exodus 16

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you….”

Exodus 16:4a (NRSV)

            Many years ago, almost simultaneously, two pieces of news became public. First, a mention of the possibility of creating a foodstuff with high nutritional value through the petroleum process, and second, a well-known agency discovered the development of a fish flour, also of high nutritional value.

            Human beings have to eat. Since ancient times bread has represented the biggest need for humanity. This food has pushed the discovery of unknown regions, served as the impulse for great discoveries, and has taken them even to death in search of new ways of greater abundance of material goods. In the Bible, God is known as the giver of this food, the same bread which they saw fall every day as manna which they did not work to obtain.

            Jesus used this human need for bread as an appropriate metaphor of what He means for life. He said: I am the bread of life…. Feed yourself on God is a daring image. It is the nourishment of a Jesus who is the author. and at the same time the sustainer, of our lives. This feeding ourselves on Him is his way of uniting us to Him, renewing us, restoring us to our true nature. Jesus is the bread of life. So necessary is this same life that preserves us daily and is familiar to us as the energy given to us. Is this Christ for us?

 

Prayer: My loving Father, giver of all that I have, today I ask that you supply that which is lacking for those who lack physical bread and those who do not have spiritual bread. Feed us on you, Amen.

EL PAN NUESTRO DE CADA DIA

Exodo 16

Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: He aquí yo os haré llover pan del cielo…

Éxodo 16:4

            Hace muchos años casi simultáneamente salieron publicadas dos noticias: la primera hablaba de la posibilidad de crear una materia alimenticia de alto valor nutritivo a través del procesamiento del petróleo. Por otra parte una agencia noticiosa nos hacía enterar de la elaboración de una harina de pescado también de alto valor nutritivo.

            El ser humano tiene que comer. Desde tiempos muy antiguos el pan ha representado el gran problema de la humanidad. El alimento lo ha movido a regiones desconocidas, le ha impulsado a grandes descubrimientos, le ha llevado incluso a la muerte en busca de nuevos caminos, de mayor abundancia de bienes materiales. En la Biblia, Dios es reconocido como el dador de este alimento, lo mismo por aquellos que lo veían caer día a día como maná, que por quienes trabajan por obtenerlo.

            Jesús utiliza esta necesidad human del pan como una figura apropiada de lo que Él significa para la vida. Él dijo: Yo soy el pan de la vida… Alimentarse de Dios es una imagen atrevida. Es el aporte de un Jesús que es autor de nuestra vida y a la vez sustentador de la misma. Esto de alimentarse de Él es su manera de unirnos a Él, renovándonos, restaurándonos a nuestra verdadera naturaleza. Jesús es el pan de vida. Tan necesario como la vida misma que preserva, tan diario y familiar a nosotros como la energía que nos proporciona. ¿Es así Cristo para nosotros?

 

Oración: Mi amoroso Padre, dador de todo cuanto tengo, en este día te pido que suplas la carencia de aquellos a quienes falta pan material y a los que no tienen pan espiritual. Aliméntanos de ti. Amén.
