THE HIGH PRICE

2 Timothy 4:1-18

Do your best to come to see me quickly, for Demas, will because he loved this world… (NIV)

2 Timothy 4:9,10b

Reading this fragment from Paul’s letter to Timothy moves me to profound compassion. It’s one of those texts that can pass unnoticed before so much ethical and theological greatness found in the rest of the letter. However, it’s magnificent to recognize how the apostle developed his work in the middle of great strife. The state of spirit we notice is of great disappointment and helplessness in the face of the abandonment–or if you will–the betrayal by some of his ministry’s companions. However, none of this stops Paul; he rather uses the experience to transmit it to his disciple.

The seed of the gospel must be sown many times in difficult fields under many hostile situations, among them our own mental or spiritual situation. But it is then that examples such as that of Paul become more pertinent. We must, like him, persist in our tasks and preach and teach and live the gospel genuinely. We must, like the apostle, respond to the evil we’ve received with blessings and with our prayers so that a change may exist in those who betray, who oppress, who are indolent or stingy when faced with others needs. Clearly, this is nothing easy; it’s a high price that we have to assume if we are truly Jesus’s followers.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for Paul’s example. May we always  approach his legacy of life with passion and compassion. May we preach your gospel in all places and at all times, beyond the stumbling and barriers that would deter us. Amen.

EL ALTO PRECIO

2 Timoteo 4:1-18
