LISTEN TO HIS MESSAGES

Hebrews 12: 1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (NIV)

Hebrews 12:1

            Death continues being a mystery in our faith life. Some years ago, Maestro Castellanos shared wise words concerning death that still remain with us today, “Death is not final, it’s a step toward a much fuller form of life …” However, this mystery still anguishes us and fills us with unanswered questions. It deeply saddens us to say goodbye to our loved ones, brothers and sisters in faith. In our church, I remember that on saying goodbye to ruling elder Mayda Albán Rodríguez, in the service that we call “Witness to the Resurrection,” her niece, Elizabeth, unfolded a crumpled scrap of paper that she’d extracted from Mayda’s pocket the night before and challenged us to listen to her message in beautiful words that invited us to strengthen our faith through the prayer she shared.

             What a beautiful testimony! We always thought we should speak and offer testimonies of those people who had shared part of their life with us, those who had passed. But the challenge is to listen to their messages, although now they may not be physically with us, and that those messages continue with us, throwing a light into the race of life that we have before us. We continue our journey with patience, and as the text asks us, “stripping us of all weight.” It is in this way that we may have a coherent faith and prayer life together with this great cloud of witnesses.

 

Prayer: Thank you Lord for all those people we’ve had the privilege to know, and who have impacted us with a testimony of faith and fidelity to your work. Let us be open to their messages, although now they are not physically at our side. Amen.

ESCUCHAR SUS MENSAJES

Hebreos 12: 1-3

Por tanto, nosotros también, teniendo en derredor nuestro tan grande nube de testigos, despojémonos de todo peso y del pecado que nos asedia, y corramos con paciencia la carrera que tenemos por delante

Hebreos 12:1

            La muerte sigue siendo un misterio en nuestra vida de fe. El maestro Castellanos hace algunos años compartió sabias palabras sobre la muerte, que nos siguen acompañando hoy: “La muerte no es verdad, es el paso a una forma de vida más plena…” Sin embargo, este misterio aún nos angustia y nos llena de preguntas sin respuestas. Nos entristece mucho despedir a nuestros seres queridos, hermanos y hermanas en la fe. Recuerdo que al  despedir en nuestra Iglesia a la Presbítera Gobernante Mayda Albán Rodríguez en el culto que llamamos “Testimonio de la resurrección”,  su nieta Elizabeth sacó un papelito estrujado que extrajera la noche anterior del bolso de Mayda y nos desafió a escuchar su mensaje en hermosas frases que nos invitaban a fortalecer la fe a través de la oración.

            ¡Qué hermoso testimonio! Siempre pensamos que debemos hablar y ofrecer testimonios de aquellas personas que han compartido parte de la vida con nosotros y ya no están. Pero el desafío es escuchar sus mensajes, aunque ya no estén físicamente con nosotros, y que esos  mensajes nos sigan acompañando y arrojando luz en la carrera de la vida que tenemos por delante. Sigamos nuestro camino con paciencia,  y como nos pide el texto, despojándonos de todo peso. Es así que podremos tener una vida coherente de fe y oración junto a esa gran nube de testigos.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, por todas esas personas que hemos tenido el privilegio de conocer y que nos han impactado con un testimonio de fe y fidelidad a tu obra. Permite que estemos abiertos a sus mensajes aunque ya no están físicamente a nuestro lado. Amén.
