LIKE THE WIDOW AND PILAR

Luke 21: 1-4

            This is one of the best known poems by José Martí for Cubans, but it’s not necessary to remember much of its content:  There are two mothers and young girls placed in very different socioeconomical situations. One child with shoes and the other barefoot; one rich and healthy, and the other poor and ill; one child that gives, and the other who receives.

            But…why does Pilar disobey the order to care for her shoes? Who asked Pilar to give them to her? It’s certain that the young girl had others, but these were very special to her mother. Luke’s text, in one way or another, could respond to this question.

            The spirit that moved the poor widow was the same spirit of mercy that moved Pilar, despite the fact that she was a rich girl, and she was the same person who inspired thousands of Cubans to give away food, clothing, hygienic material, medicine and much more when confronted with the disastrous experiences lived by many during the Covid 19 pandemic in our country.

            Despite the difficult times experienced, we can always find people of solidarity each day, people who are able to give what they have, not just what is left over.

 

Prayer: Lord, we ask you that whether we are rich or poor, that you put mercy and love in our hearts, so when you place coffers in our journey we may always be disposed to fill them with the most precious that we have. Amen.

COMO LA VIUDA Y PILAR

Lucas 21: 1-4

Porque todos aquellos echaron para las ofrendas de Dios de lo que les sobraba; más esta, de su pobreza echó todo lo que tenía.

Lucas 21:4

            Este es uno de los poemas de José Martí más conocido por todos los cubanos, no hay que recordar mucho de qué trata el texto; dos madres y dos niñas colocadas en situaciones socioeconómicas muy diferentes; una niña con zapatos y la otra descalza, una rica y saludable y la otra pobre y enferma, una niña que da y la otra que recibe.

            Pero… ¿ por qué Pilar desobedece la orden de cuidar sus zapatos? ¿quién le pidió a Pilar que los regalara? Es cierto que la niña tenía otros, pero, estos eran muy especiales para su madre. El texto de Lucas pudiera de alguna manera responder esas preguntas.

            El espíritu que movió a la viuda pobre, fue el mismo espíritu de misericordia que movió a Pilar, a pesar de que era una niña rica, y fue el mismo que ha movido a miles de cubanos a desprenderse de alimentos, ropas, aseo, comida, medicinas, y mucho más, ante la desastrosa experiencia vivida por muchos con la Covid 19 en nuestro país.

            A pesar de que corren tiempos difíciles, siempre podemos encontrar personas solidarias en todo momento, que son capaces de quitarse lo que tienen y dar, no lo que les sobre, sino compartir lo que tiene.

 

Oración: Señor, te pedimos que tanto si somos ricos o pobres, pongas misericordia y amor en nuestro corazón, para cuando Tú coloques arcas en nuestro camino, estar siempre dispuestas a llenarlas con lo más preciado que tengamos. Amén
