OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PEOPLE

Luke  19: 1-10

For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.

            What lessons can we learn from the story of Zacchaeus? He was a tax collector, a servant of the Roman empire who had gotten rich by extorting the people of Israel.  The Jews looked down on him as a sinner.

            What feeling moved Zacchaeus to run and climb a tree with the goal of knowing Jesus?  It is hard to know.  Nevertheless, in the attitude that he assumes, we discover actions that surprise us.  First, he climbs a tree at the risk of being considered ridiculous. Second, when Jesus announces his visit, he shows great happiness.  And his third action shows a radical change.  He returned the portion of his riches in a much larger quantity than the law required, showing a real repentance and his decision to amend the damage he had inflicted.  Why did this happen?  He had found the Son of God, who lifted his gaze to call him.  He shared with him despite the gossip. 

            Zacchaeus’ attitude shows that even the ones we consider the biggest sinners have the opportunity to repent, and that true repentance is shown with works. But we discover other people, those who gossip, criticize and exclude, who do not trust in the power of love. We should watch that we not do something similar and carry the message of the gospel to all.

 

Prayer: Lord, guide us in correcting our errors, help us to look at everyone with love, and let us avoid prejudices and gossip. Allow us to try to follow Jesus at all times. Amen.

Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido

            ¿Qué lecciones podemos aprender del relato de Zaqueo? Era este un cobrador de impuestos, servidor del poder romano que se había enriquecido extorsionando al pueblo de Israel. Los judíos lo despreciaban por pecador.

            ¿Qué sentimiento movió a Zaqueo para correr y subirse a un árbol con el fin de conocer a Jesús? Difícil saberlo. Sin embargo, en la actitud que asume, descubrimos acciones que nos sorprenden. Primero, se sube a un árbol a riesgo de ser considerado ridículo. Segundo, cuando Jesús le anuncia su visita, muestra una gran alegría. Su tercera acción muestra un cambio radical. Se desprende de parte de la riqueza en mucha mayor cantidad de lo que la ley estipulaba, mostrando un arrepentimiento real y su decisión de enmendar el daño producido. ¿Por qué ha sucedido esto? Se ha encontrado con el Hijo de Dios, quien levantó su mirada para llamarlo. Compartió con él, a pesar de las murmuraciones.

            La actitud de Zaqueo muestra que aun los que consideramos más pecadores, tienen la oportunidad de arrepentirse, y que el arrepentimiento verdadero se muestra con obras. Pero descubrimos a otros personajes, los que murmuran, critican y excluyen, que no confían en el poder del amor. Debemos cuidarnos de hacer algo semejante, y llevar el mensaje del evangelio a todos.

 

Oración: Señor, guíanos en la rectificación de nuestros errores, ayúdanos a mirar con amor a todos y evitar los prejuicios y murmuraciones. Permite que tratemos de seguir a Jesús en todo momento. Amén.
