TRUE CONFESSION

Jeremiah 15:19-21

 Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.

Joel 2:13 (NRSV)

            Every Sunday in worship we confess to being sinners through a prayer said for all by one person. Then, later, we hear a promise of grace and pardon which the person leading worship pronounces.

            There is nothing objectionable in this part of the liturgy; it tells us that we can present ourselves in front of God, even though we are guilty, in the hope of God’s grace. But is that confession sufficient and that liturgical absolution enough? When we go through that part of the worship, can we identify and name our real concrete sins? Does our heart bleed when we realize that we have turned our backs on God and have submitted to the idols of this world?

            The Lord is always waiting anxiously for us to turn to Him with all our being, because he takes no pleasure in chastising, but rather in pardoning. That is why he himself carried our guilt to the cross. But we will never be able to enjoy his peace with a repentance that is only formal and fleeting.

 

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice on the cross. Thank you that we are always able to turn to you seeking pardon. Amen.

CONFESIÓN VERDADERA

Jeremias 15:19-21

¡Vuélvanse ustedes al Señor su Dios, y desgárrense el corazón en  vez de desgarrarse la ropa! Porque el Señor es tierno y compasivo, paciente y todo amor, dispuesto siempre a levantar el castigo.

Joel 2:13

            Cada domingo en el culto confesamos ser pecadores por medio de una oración que alguien pronuncia por todos. Y luego escuchamos una promesa de gracia y perdón que anuncia la persona que dirige el culto.

            No hay nada objetable en esta parte de la liturgia; ella nos dice que podemos presentarnos delante de Dios, aunque somos culpables, en espera de su gracia. ¿Pero  es suficiente esa confesión y basta esa absolución litúrgica? Cuando pasamos por ese momento del culto ¿identificamos y podemos nombrar nuestros verdaderos pecados concretos? ¿Sangra nuestro corazón al constatar que hemos andado de espaldas a Dios y nos hemos sometido a los ídolos de este mundo?

            El Señor está siempre esperando ansioso que con todo nuestro ser, nos volvamos a Él, porque Él no se complace en castigar, sino en perdonar. Por eso es que Él  mismo ha cargado nuestras culpas en una cruz. Pero no podremos nunca gozar de su paz con una arrepentimiento tan solo formal y pasajero.

 

Oración: Gracias Jesús por tu sacrificio en la cruz. Gracias porque siempre podemos volvernos a ti buscando perdón. Amén
