505^th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation

THE REFORMATION DOES NOT END

            On October 31,1517, Martin Luther nailed to the door of the abbey in Wittenberg, Germany his 95 theses fundamentally against the system of indulgences, one of the corrupt practices of the Church in that time: a purported purchase of salvation by the faithful.  This action was the beginning of the movement of the Protestant Reformation, that was sealed with the call for the authority of the Scriptures as the only law for faith and the Christian life, and to defend justification by faith alone, not by works, and much less by “buying” papal indulgences.

            The emphasis was on the interpretation of the Scriptures and their knowledge, on the way that the believer could draw close to God not from fear or ignorance, but from an adequate understanding of God from the Bible, and due to that focus, the Bible began to be translated in every nation in the language understood by its people.  The movement of the Reformation put a profound emphasis on the preparation of the clergy, ensuring that the Word was preached correctly. 

            Let us remember that our God is not static, but a powerful God who continues to call us to exercise a prophetic ministry in each era.  Where is the divine call for you today?

Día de la Reforma Protestante (Aniversario 505)

LA REFORMA NO TERMINA

Isaías 6:1-13

Después oí la voz del Señor, que decía: ¿A quién enviaré...? Entonces respondí yo: Heme aquí, envíame a mí.

            El 31 de Octubre del año 1517 Martín Lutero colocaría en la puerta de la abadía de Wittenberg, en Alemania, sus 95 tesis en contra fundamentalmente del sistema de indulgencias, uno de los modos de corrupción de la Iglesia de aquella época, en una pretendida compra de la salvación por los fieles. Esta acción sería el despertar del movimiento de la Reforma Protestante, que tuvo como sello una llamada a la autoridad de las Escrituras como regla única para la fe y la vida cristiana, y a defender la justificación solo por la fe, no en base a obras, mucho menos por “comprar” las indulgencias papales.

            El énfasis estaba en la interpretación de las Escrituras y su conocimiento, de modo que el creyente pudiera acercarse a Dios no desde el temor o la ignorancia, sino desde una adecuada comprensión del Dios bíblico, y por ello la Biblia comenzó a ser traducida en cada nación en la lengua entendida por el pueblo. El movimiento de la Reforma hizo un profundo énfasis en la preparación de sus clérigos, de modo que la Palabra fuese predicada correctamente.

            Recordemos que nuestro Dios que no es estático, es un Dios poderoso que nos sigue llamando para ejercer un ministerio profético en cada tiempo. ¿Dónde se halla el llamado divino hoy para ti?
