IF YOU WISH...

Mark 1:40-45B

Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean.”

Mark 1:41 (NIV)

            In this meditation we come to know the story of one of those men who approached Jesus so that he might be cured. Like the others, he recognized Christ to be the Savior. He believed him to be the only one capable of remediating his evils. On this occasion it deals with a leper. For Jesus this was nothing new. What is truly impressive is that the leper expressed himself in inaudible terms, “if you wish, you can cure me.” Would it be possible for Jesus to refuse? If that were so, we would all be lost. Apart from Jesus, where can complete health be found?

            In his petition, the leper does not present himself with the twisted intentions of the Pharisees: “you can cure me because everything for you is possible. If you do not cure me, it is because you don’t want to. If you do not want to, you are not good, and if you are not good, how do you make miracles? Is it with the power of demons?”

            Not a chance. The leper in our story knows Jesus profoundly. He knows what’s in his heart. Therefore, he kneels in total humility. That’s why he says, “if you wish,” because he fully believes in the goodness and love of Christ. Do we believe this? Does our healing depend upon our  belief in Christ?

 

Prayer: Lord, I trust in you. Fulfill your will in me. Amen.

Marcos 1:41

            En esta meditación conoceremos la historia de uno de esos hombres que se acercó a Jesús para que le curase. Como los demás, reconoció en Cristo al Salvador. Creyó en Él como el único que podía remediar sus males. En esta ocasión se trata de un leproso. Para Jesús el caso no presentaba novedad. Lo que sí impresiona es que el leproso se expresa en unos términos inauditos: Si quieres, puedes curarme ¿Sería posible que Cristo no quisiese? Si así fuera, estaríamos perdidos. Fuera de Cristo, ¿dónde puede encontrarse completa salud?

            El leproso no se presentó con su petición con las torcidas intenciones de los fariseos: “Tú puedes curarme, porque todo te es posible. Si no me curas es porque no quieres. Si no quieres no eres bueno. Y si no eres bueno ¿Cómo haces milagros? Con el poder de los demonios”. Nada de eso. El leproso del relato conoce a Cristo profundamente. Sabe lo que hay en su corazón. Por eso se arrodilla, en total humildad. Por eso dice: Si quieres, porque cree plenamente en la bondad y el amor de Cristo. ¿Creemos nosotros esto? De nuestra confianza en Cristo depende nuestra curación.

 

Oración: Señor, en ti confío. Cúmplase en  mí tu voluntad.  Amén.
