UNITED IN WORSHIP

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father  your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 (NRSV)

            There are many styles of worship. Some services are informal and expressive, others are quiet. There are churches that carefully follow the order of worship printed in a bulletin. Others have spontaneous services, led by a leader.

            There are churches of many sizes. Some are so small that all the people know each other, and when a prayer request is made, no explanations are necessary because everyone knows the details. Other churches are so large that people only know the members of their Sunday school class.

            Do any of these traits define what congregations are considered churches? No. In the first letter to the Thessalonians Paul defines the church as the place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been received and is manifested in acts of faith, works of love and constancy of hope. This is what transforms a group of people into a church. Without this, no group can be church.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to be your church. May we learn to live fully as you taught us. Amen.

UNIDOS EN LA ADORACION

1 Tesalonicenses 1:1-10

Siempre damos gracias a Dios por todos ustedes...recordando qué activa ha sido su fe, qué servicial su amor, y qué fuerte en los sufrimientos su esperanza en nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

1 Tesalonicenses 1:2-3

            Hay muchos estilos de adoración. Algunos servicios son informales y expresivos, otros son tranquilos. Hay iglesias que cuidadosamente siguen el orden de culto impreso en un boletín. Otras tienen servicios espontáneos, dirigidos por un líder.

            Hay iglesias de muchos tamaños. Algunas son tan pequeñas que todas las personas se conocen entre sí, y cuando se eleva una petición de oración, no es necesario dar explicaciones porque todos conocen los detalles. Otras iglesias son tan grandes que la gente sólo conoce a los miembros de su clase de la escuela dominical.

            ¿Algunos de estos rasgos define el que las congregaciones sean consideradas Iglesias? No. En la primera carta a los Tesalonicenses Pablo define la iglesia como el lugar en donde el Evangelio de Jesucristo ha sido recibido y se manifiesta en los actos de fe, en las obras del amor y en la constancia de la esperanza. Esto es lo que transforma a un grupo de gente en iglesia. Sin esto, ningún grupo puede ser iglesia.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, ayúdanos a ser tu iglesia. Que aprendamos a vivir plenamente como tú nos enseñaste. Amén.
