IF WE SURRENDER WE WILL BE FREE

John 3:14-21

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:17 (NRSV)

            God did not send his Son to the world to judge it, rather to save it, but at the cost of his death on the cross. This verse today may lead one to believe that suffering is necessary in order to be saved. But then there comes a discourse that contrasts light and darkness. What does justice consist of? Not in punishment for our sins, nor in the need to offer propitiatory sacrifices, but rather believing and loving the light.

            We are not saved by works nor do indulgences save us. Only the love of Christ saves us and our passion that the truth come to light and be manifest. Works will be the consequence of his love working through us. A complete and trusting surrender into the hands of Jesus is required. Can we do that? Those of us who call ourselves believers are quick to say, “Yes, we can!” But can we really surrender ourselves confidently into his hands without asking for anything, without wanting to know everything or where we are going?

            In this context, what are works? Preaching about the light with determination, working with the truth, trying to place ourselves in his hands with confidence, with faith, knowing that there is no person in this world who loves us more, not questioning only because we follow in his footsteps, preaching to the whole world that God is love.

 

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your marvelous love expressed in the sacrifice of your Son on the cross. Amen.

ENTREGUÉMONOS  Y SEREMOS LIBRES

Juan 3:14-21

Porque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él.

Juan 3:17

            Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para juzgarlo, sino para salvarlo, pero al costo de su muerte en la cruz. Este versículo de hoy puede dar lugar a creer que el sufrimiento es necesario para poder salvarse. Pero después viene todo un discurso que contrasta la luz con las tinieblas. ¿En qué consiste el juicio? No en el castigo por nuestros pecados, no en tener que ofrecer sacrificios propiciatorios, sino en creer y amar la luz.

            No nos salvan las obras, no nos salvan las indulgencias, nos salva sólo el amor en Cristo y nuestra pasión porque la verdad salga a la luz y se manifieste. Las obras serán consecuencia de su amor obrando a través nuestro. Se exige una entrega completa y confiada en las manos de Jesús. ¿Podemos hacer esto? Los que nos decimos creyentes rápidamente decimos: “Sí podemos”, pero, ¿podemos de verdad entregarnos confiadamente en sus manos sin pedir nada, sin querer saberlo todo o a dónde vamos?

            ¿Qué son las obras en este contexto? Predicar sobre la luz a porfía, obrar con la verdad, intentar ponernos en esas manos confiadamente, con fe, sabiendo que no hay persona en este mundo que  nos ame más, sin cuestionamientos, solo porque seguimos sus pisadas, predicando a todo el mundo que Dios es amor.

 

 

Oración: Gracias por tu maravilloso amor Padre Celestial, expresado por el sacrificio de tu Hijo en la cruz. Amén.
