LOVE IS THE ANSWER

Matthew 5.43-48

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

The followers of Jesus had enemies. His words make us think of the persecutions suffered by the first Christian communities. Jesus exhorts us not to hold grudges, but rather to forgive and pray for those who afflict us. The term “neighbor” literally means “close,” or “near.” The Jews understood this to refer to people of their own people. It is possible that the Pharisees limited it to other Pharisees. Attitudes that Jesus does not accept and shares with his disciples. Hence the insistence and teaching of Jesus to love those who are in front of us, close to us, next to us.

We must be active in dialogue through love with those who offend us. When they slapped him, Jesus himself, asked why they did it. The important thing is to analyze our attitude towards our neighbor. Do we move in a spirit of revenge, of rancor, or of getting the most we can get for our help; or whether we act with generosity, dedication and love.

 

Prayer: Beloved Lord, we know how great your mercy and love is for each us. Help us to show that love with courage to those who sometimes hurt us. Amen.

EL AMOR ES LA RESPUESTA.

Mateo 5.43-48

Pero yo les digo: Amen a sus enemigos y oren por quienes los persiguen

Los seguidores de Jesús tenían enemigos. Sus palabras hacen pensar en las persecuciones que sufrían las primeras comunidades cristianas. Jesús exhorta a no guardar rencor; más aún, a perdonar y orar por lo que nos afligen. EL término “prójimo” significa literalmente “cercano”, o “próximo”. Los judíos entendían que esto se refería a gente de su propio pueblo. Es posible que los fariseos lo limitaban a otros fariseos. Actitudes que Jesús no acepta y le comparte a sus discípulos. De aquí la insistencia y enseñanza de Jesús de amar al que tenemos enfrente, cerca, a nuestro lado.

Debemos ser activos en el diálogo a través del amor con quienes nos ofenden. Al mismo Jesús, cuando lo abofetearon, preguntó por qué lo hacían. Lo importante es analizar nuestra actitud ante el prójimo, si nos movemos en un espíritu de venganza, de rencor, de regatear al máximo nuestra ayuda, o si actuamos con generosidad, entrega y amor.

 

Oración: Amado Señor, sabemos que grande es tu misericordia y amor para con cada una de tus hijas e hijos, ayúdanos mostrar ese amor con valentía a quienes a veces nos lastiman. Amén.
