THE LORD DEFENDS US.

Matthew 5:38-42

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth was an Old Testament rule that forbade excessive revenge. However, this rule could apply only to judges and government officials. Its purpose was to prevent a judge from awarding greater punishment than the crime deserved

The Jewish leaders of Jesus’ time had given the wrong meaning to this rule. They taught that the rule allowed all Jews to take vengeance for personal offenses.

The meaning of this rule is very deep. It means that we should love our enemies, we should be merciful and meek. No matter what kind of wrong they do to us, we must never take revenge. God will defend us: he will take vengeance for us; we can trust him to do justice (1 Peter 2:23) for all the harm done to us.

Let God be the one to cleanse the offense, for his vengeance is divine.

EL SEÑOR NOS DEFIENDE.

Mateo 5:38-42

Pero yo os digo; no resistáis al que es malo, antes, a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha vuélvele también la otra.

Ojo por ojo y diente por diente era una norma del Antiguo Testamento que prohibía vengarse de manera excesiva. Sin embargo, esta regla se podía aplicar únicamente a los jueces y los oficiales del gobierno. Su propósito era prevenir que un juez otorgara un castigo mayor de lo que merecía el crimen.

Los líderes judíos de la época de Jesús le habían dado un significado erróneo a esta regla. Ellos enseñaban que la regla permitía a todos los judíos tomar venganza por ofensas personales..

El significado de ésta es muy profundo. Significa que debemos amar a nuestros enemigos, debemos ser misericordiosos y mansos. No importa la clase de mal que nos hagan, nunca debemos vengarnos. Dios nos defenderá: él se vengará por nosotros, podemos confiar en que él hará justicia (1 Pedro2:23) por todo el daño recibido.

Dejemos que sea Dios quien se ocupe de limpiar la ofensa, porque su venganza es divina.
