WHO DO WE LOOK LIKE? 

Luke  7: 31-35

“To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?

The text we read follows many miracles performed by Jesus. He tries to confirm to John the Baptist’s disciples that he was the awaited Messiah. For this he uses several signs: of healing, of restoration, of love towards the most needy and marginalized people. However, the scholars of the Law did not recognize John the Baptist, nor his message, nor did they identify with Jesus. These images were not in correspondence with the messiah they had imagined.

Our society lives like those Pharisees who failed to see Jesus among them. Today, even though we study the Word of God, we live with prejudices and paradigms that are sometimes oppressive. Laws, titles, social status, and physical appearance are more important than all the good things that people have to share.

Who do I look like? Who do I really want to be like? These are the questions that should interest us. If looking like Jesus is difficult, let’s look at other examples that the Bible shows us and imitate his gestures of solidarity and his faith in God.

 

Prayer: God of life, allow us to be humble and to be like you. Amen.

¿A QUIÉN NOS PARECEMOS?

LUCAS 7: 31-35

¿A qué compararé la gente de este tiempo? ¿A qué se parece?

El texto que leemos, se encuentra a continuación de muchos milagros hechos por Jesús. Él trata de confirmar a los discípulos de Juan el Bautista que era el Mesías esperado. Para ello utiliza varias señales: de sanación, de restauración, de amor hacia las personas más necesitadas y marginadas. Sin embargo, los estudiosos de la Ley, no reconocieron a Juan el bautista, ni a su mensaje, y tampoco identificaron a Jesús. Estas imágenes no estaban en correspondencia con el mesías que habían imaginado.

La sociedad nuestra. vive como esos fariseos que no supieron ver a Jesús entre ellos. Hoy, aunque estudiamos la Palabra de Dios, vivimos con prejuicios y paradigmas que, en ocasiones, son opresivos. Son más importantes las leyes, los títulos, el estatus social, el aspecto físico, que todos lo bueno que las personas tienen para compartir. 

¿A quién me parezco? ¿A quién realmente me quiero parecer? Esas son las preguntas que deben interesarnos. Si parecemos a Jesús resulta difícil, miremos otros ejemplos que la Biblia nos muestra e imitemos sus gestos solidarios y su fe en Dios.

 

Oración: Dios de la vida, permítenos ser humildes y que podamos parecernos a ti. Amén.
