WHEN THERE IS FAITH THERE IS PEACE

Mark 4:35-41

Why do you fear so? How is it that you do not have faith?

Mark 4:40 (NIV)

This account of Jesus calming the storm appears in greater detail in Mark, the shortest gospel. It seems that the evangelist attached great importance to what happened there. Jesus is sleeping in the best place in the boat when a storm strikes and his fearful disciples wake him saying, “Do you not care that we are sinking?” Jesus reproaches them for their lack of faith, and immediately rebukes the storm which calms down completely.

If we take the story literally, we are left with one more example of God’s power to act on nature; but if we apply its meaning to our lives, then it becomes much more important.

As in the story, the storms of life surprise us on countless occasions, when we are unprepared to face them. When one looks at the wind and the waves, one begins to sink, as happened to Peter on that occasion when he wanted to walk on the water toward Jesus. Only when by faith, instead of anxiety and fear, we look to God and the power with which he sustains us does peace come to us, that which according to Paul surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus (Phil 4:7). When there is faith there is peace.

Prayer: Beloved Father, may we remember how Jesus taught us to call you “Abba,” in that intimate and totally trustworthy childish language. We want to live in peace with faith and you. Amen.

CUANDO HAY FE, HAY PAZ

Marcos 4:35-41

¿Por qué tienen tanto miedo? ¿Cómo es que no tienen fe?

Marcos 4:40

EVEN WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO GO SHOPPING

I Timothy 2:1-8

For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good . . . .

Romans 13:4ª (NIV)

One piece of news that has caused the most stir in recent times was the announcement of the temporary suspension of cash deposits of dollars in foreign currency accounts. No matter how much effort the state has tried to present the situation, the majority of the population does not assimilate the explanation and floods the networks with astonishing complaints and witty jokes.

However, we must remember that for a non-majority group of the population, having a foreign exchange account was never possible. Although catharsis is necessary (poorly managed emotions cause a lot of havoc in our body), we want to remember that in addition to raising our voices for what we believe is necessary, it is also a biblical exhortation that we pray for our leaders. Paul insists that “supplication, prayers and petitions” be made, but also in thanksgiving. It is a healthy spiritual exercise not to focus on what we dislike or what we must oppose, but rather to raise our sincere prayers to God for those who govern, to recognize the titanic effort they make to maintain what we take for granted as a right, and accordingly give thanks for it.

Prayer: Even without being able to go shopping, good God, we remember the biblical promises that assure us of your support and care. May we live a life that reflects that certainty of faith. Amen.

Diciembre 13, lunes

Aun sin poder ir de compras.

I Timoteo 2:1-8

Third Sunday of Advent

JOY AND DELIGHT

Zephaniah 3:14-18a

“He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth.”

 Luke 1:14 (NIV)

The prophet Zephaniah said to the faithful people of Israel that there was no need to worry since their savior is a powerful God. The invitation to joy sets the fundamental tone of his words. The motive of joy is the coming of God, who has already canceled all condemnation, and dwells amid them as Savior. “The Lord, your God, is among you!”

This Advent season is one of joy. The evils and fears that surround us find their end there  with the arrival of Jesus Christ. The prophet announces that God comes to dwell among us, and that is the fundamental reason for our joy. There is no need to fear when God manifests his love. The scene of the annunciation in Luke could well be inspired by Zephaniah’s text. Today is the time to rejoice because the Lord is closer than ever.

Prayer: Our God, I am fervently awaiting the birth of your Son. Grant me to live in joyful expectation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tercer Domingo de Adviento

ALEGRÍA Y REGOCIJO

Sofonias 3:14-18a

No temas...”.

ROOT OF ALL EVIL

1 Timothy 6:1-10

The love of money is the root of all evil.

1Timothy 6:10 (NIV)

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that money is not needed. What is affirmed is the verse that accompanies this reflection. The apostle of Cuban independence, a good Bible reader, recognized that “The exaggerated appetite for wealth is the root of all the nation’s ills.”  (OC volume 1, page 427).

The Rev. Rafael Cepeda Clemente, in his book The Ethical Christian in the Work of José Martí, selected 70 texts by Martí with the corresponding biblical references. Not many people know this facet of the master and apostle which continued to be a reference for all Cubans, regardless of any political/philosophical thought. The great conflicts that afflict nations are derived from an ambition for money, for material wealth, and/or geopolitical ambitions for power.

If we are able to understand and apply our total faith and trust that God will guide us in our actions and our unconditional commitment to the mission that he entrusts to us, what we need he will provide in a wonderful and inexplicable way. All of us who belong to that delivery can confirm it with lived and testimonial evidence.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may the material never prevail in our mind, because you always supply us with what we need for your glory and honor. In the name of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

RAÍZ DE TODOS LOS MALES

1 Timoteo 6:1-10

SERVING

Mark 10: 35-45

And whomever wants to be first must be slave of all.

Mark 10:44 (NIV)

Materially speaking, anyone who has provided unconditional and unpaid service is something similar to what parents do for their children, something that cannot be bought with any money, since this lies in the sphere of love, very similar to that of God with his creation. The text of today’s meditation brings to mind a thought of José Martí, “It is necessary, to be served by all, to serve all. (OC, volume 3, page 337).

I am convinced that for all those who have experienced a service based on this principle, the reward has been unexpected, incalculable, and unimaginable. What a beautiful feeling! Especially when the service requires great sacrifice where the depths of our feelings are tested.

All human beings that history considers virtuous are those who humbly act and exalt those who accompany them in their service projects. Isn’t the unusual case of the Creator God of the universe incarnate in Jesus Christ washing the disciple’s feet not irrefutable, overwhelming, and indisputable proof that God is all love?

Prayer: God of love, there are no words that can eternally thank you for your abundant blessings, which must be celebrated and thanked in service to others. In Jesus we pray. Amen.

EL SERVIR

Marcos 10: 35-45

A QUADRUPLE RENEWAL

2 Corinthians 4:13-18

. . . though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

The apostle Paul tells us his interior being, despite physical wear and tribulations, was renewing day by day. Some authors detail something of what this renewal means, mentioning four stages that could describe the evolution of the moral and spiritual development: cleansing, growth, awakening, and presentation.

Many times, Christianity focuses overmuch on cleansing, translated into certain “purity codes” that do not generally reflect the moral ideals of Jesus who pointed to our interior attitudes (Matthew 6-7), whose goal is not moral perfection but love. Growth is the process of maturity that, even in the midst of the limitations our environment imposes, does not allow our ego to cloud testimony. Awakening is the phase of spiritual experience that makes us overcome the eminence of the self as something separate from divinity. It should be the goal of all devotion. The purpose of this awakening is not personal perfection, but surrender: love and union with God.

From this point, presenting oneself happens naturally, which means bringing our hearts and minds to the suffering and real problems of the world in commitment and serious concern for justice and peace for all.

Prayer: Take our lives, Lord, in an integral part of renewal, necessary to be witness that abounds for your glory. Amen.

Diciembre 9, jueves

Una renovación cuádruple

2 Corintios 4:13-18

FULFILL HIS WILL

Luke 22: 39-46

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

Luke 22: 42 (NIV)

Concerning WILL, in the Christian world there are two directions, like a cross. One horizontal and one vertical. The first refers to relations between humans, and the second between humans and God. Distortions can occur in both, or they can simply be damaged by self-centeredness  and bad desires that lead to disaster for God’s vision for humanity. Let us remember Jesus’ words, “. . . I do not seek my will, but of the one who sent me.”  (John 5: 30).

Communication will be superior to 5G if we have the communion of the Holy Spirit well “greased” with our prayers and acts of service according to his will, with effective results, so much so that in history all the human beings that have followed this standard or spiritual platform remain unimpeachable in any age. The Spirit, under these conditions, has always accompanied us in making decisions, the results of which we would not immediately see, because only He knows the “how, when, and where” He will show us the answer, which is superior to  what we could conceive.

Prayer: Lord, always do your will in all the situations we encounter in our lives. Amen.

CÚMPLASE SU VOLUNTAD

Lucas 22: 39-46
