“THE LATEST”

LUKE 5:33-39

Jesus said: And no one after drinking old wine

Wants the new, for they say “The old is better.”

Luke 5:39 (NIV)

Having the latest thing, being up to date, having the newest model... Nowadays anyone who doesn’t have “the latest” can feel excluded, nonexistent, anachronistic. In fact, the hegemonic discourse of the great world market seems to propose that our things and behavior should be constantly changing, rejecting the old for the new. What is strange is that this criterion extends to ethics. So certain Christian teachings, such as solidarity and caring for one’s neighbor are seen as outdated and can be held against those who practice them. If we think of the Beatitudes or the Ten Commandments, to cite only two examples, we can’t help but ask ourselves why they are still valid, in spite of all the time that has passed since they were written. This is related, as the verse that began this reflection reminds us, to the fact that once we have tried living in accordance with old Christian wisdom, the novelties of the moment seem insipid as an improbable and ephemeral worldly happening. Today we recall the reformers, who transformed the Church without inventing anything new. The Reformation undoubtedly was nourished by the ancient wisdom of the Word of God, and that explains how the changes in the Church were possible.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be in “the latest” of the things of your Kingdom and your teachings. Thank you for the reformers, for their legacy of transformation based on your teachings. Amen.

LUCAS 5:33-39

Jesús dijo: Nadie que toma el vino añejo quiere después

el nuevo, porque dice: El añejo es más sabroso.

Tener la última novedad, estar a la moda, poseer el modelo más nuevo... En la actualidad quien no tiene “lo último”, puede llegar a sentirse fuera del mundo, inexistente, anacrónico. En efecto, el discurso hegemónico del gran mercado mundial parece proponer que nuestras cosas y conductas deben cambiar de manera permanente, desechando lo viejo por lo nuevo. Lo curioso del caso es que este criterio no pocas veces se hace extensivo al terreno de la ética. Así entonces, ciertas enseñanzas cristianas, tales como la solidaridad y el compromiso con el prójimo son vistos como pasados de moda y parecen descalificar a quien los practica. Si pensamos en las Bienaventuranzas o los Diez Mandamientos, por citar solo dos ejemplos, no podemos menos que interrogarnos en torno de la razón por la cual aún tienen validez, a pesar de todo el tiempo que ha pasado desde que fueron enunciadas. Esto se relaciona, como nos recuerda el versículo que inicia esta reflexión, con que una vez que hemos probado el vivir de acuerdo con la añeja sabiduría cristiana, las novedades del momento nos saben insulsas, por más que se presenten como impulsoras de un éxito mundano tan improbable como efímero. Hoy recordamos a los reformadores, quienes transformaron la Iglesia, pero sin inventar nada nuevo. Sin dudas, la Reforma bebió de la antigua sabiduría que contiene la Palabra de Dios y solo así fueron posibles los cambios en la Iglesia.

Oración: Señor, ayúdame a estar en “lo último” de las cosas de tu Reino y de tus enseñanzas. Gracias por los reformadores y reformadoras, por su legado de transformación basado en tus enseñanzas. Amén.

THE FIRE THAT TESTS US

ROMANS 5:3-4

We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Hebrews 6:12 (NIV)

Discouragement and doubt should not keep us from learning the lessons of loving discipline for us from our God, Father and Mother of life.

The blacksmith tempers his steel, heats it, shapes it, and immediately plunges it in water. If after several tries he realizes that it cannot be shaped, he throws it in the trash. The Lord is testing us, too. Maybe we cannot pass the test; but he never throws us in the trash, he’s a different kind of blacksmith who works with creativity, love, and complete patience to transform the most stubborn steel into his new creation.

We must not forget that when the furnace is very hot, we must persevere, because he is doing new things in our lives and later we will receive a great blessing. Then we can say like Job: When put to the test, I will come out like gold.

We can surely survive the test. Things that hurt and harm us change us so we can sing a hymn of perfect praise.

Prayer: Beloved God, let us pass through the test of fire and emerge victorious. Amen.

EL FUEGO QUE NOS PRUEBA

ROMANOS 5:3-4

...a fin de que no os hagáis perezosos, sino imitadores de aquello que por la fe y la paciencia heredan las promesas.

El desaliento o la duda no debe alejarnos de las lecciones de la disciplina amorosa que tiene para nosotros nuestro Dios, Padre y Madre de la vida.

El herrero prueba su acero, lo calienta, empieza a forjarlo e inmediatamente lo introduce en agua. Si después de probado varias veces se da cuenta que no puede ser forjado, lo arroja a la basura.

También el Señor nos prueba. Puede que no estemos en condiciones de sobrellevar la prueba; pero él nunca nos lanza a la basura, es un herrero diferente que siempre con creatividad, amor y paciencia absoluta transforma el acero más recio en su nueva creación.

No olvidemos que cuando el fuego esté muy caliente, debemos perseverar, más si sabemos que Dios está haciendo nuevas cosas en nuestras vidas y después recibiremos una gran bendición. Entonces podremos decir como Job: Puesto a prueba, saldré como el oro.

Seguramente que sí podemos resistir la prueba. Las cosas que lastiman y dañan nos transforman para poder cantar un himno de perfecta alabanza.

Oración: Dios amado, permítenos pasar por la prueba de fuego y salir victoriosos de ella. Amén.

2 TIMOTHY 3:15-17

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword,

it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow;

it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

Today much of humankind feels disoriented. There are many models or paradigms to follow, but they lack standards or moral principles for the conscience to decide what is right or wrong. Philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc. speak of a crisis in values. Insensitivity is growing each day; therefore, the Bible, although it is book of faith, not history, can show us the true paradigm: Jesus of Nazareth. 

Paul, in today’s text, gives thanks to God for young Timothy, who was instructed in the scriptures from infancy. He writes to him to encourage him to keep growing in his faith through the word of God, so that he may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Only getting back to the deep study of Scriptures and the example of Jesus can help people of today master basic values.

It is necessary to return to the word of God, because it is all useful for teaching, correction, and instruction in God’s righteousness.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to teach your ways to our sons and daughters so that they can follow the example of Jesus, your Son. Amen.

INSTRUCCIÓN DESDE LA NIÑEZ

2 TIMOTEO 3:15-17

Porque la palabra de  Dios tiene vida y poder. Es más aguda que cualquier espada de dos filos, y penetra hasta lo más profundo del alma y del espíritu, hasta lo más íntimo de la persona, y somete a juicio los pensamientos y las intenciones del corazón.

Hebreos 4:12

En la actualidad una gran parte de la humanidad se siente desorientada. Hay muchos modelos  o paradigmas a seguir pero estos carecen de normas o fundamentos morales para ejercitar su conciencia, para decidir lo que está bien o mal. Los filósofos, psicólogos, psiquiatras, etc., hablan de una crisis en la manifestación de los valores. La insensibilidad es mayor cada día; por lo tanto, la Biblia, sin ser un libro histórico, sino de fe, nos puede iluminar para seguir el verdadero paradigma: Jesús de Nazaret. 

Pablo en el texto de hoy da gracias a Dios por el joven Timoteo, que fue instruido en las Escrituras desde la niñez. Le escribe para alentarlo que siga creciendo en su fe a través de la Palabra de Dios, a fin de que sea perfecto enteramente y preparado para toda buena obra. Solo un regreso al estudio profundo de las Escrituras y al ejemplo de Jesús, podrán llevar al ser humano de hoy a la conquista de los valores fundamentales.

Es preciso volver a la Palabra de Dios, porque toda ella es útil para enseñar, para corregir y para instruir en la justicia de Dios.

Oración: Ayúdanos Señor,  a instruir a nuestros hijos e hijas en tus caminos, para verlos convertidos en seguidores y seguidoras del ejemplo de Jesús, tu Hijo. Amén.

1 TIMOTHY 6:11-19

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which

you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)

Faith is an essential element for a victorious life. Faith is not a luxury, an add-on, or an unnecessary extension.

Paul presents faith to young Timothy as a great battle that cannot be lost if one hopes to win the definitive conflict. Faith is the passion of serving an ideal. When one loves a project or goal passionately, he or she shows it by solid faith in it, preaches it firmly, and defends it heroically.

Faith does not mean believing despite the evidence, it means life regardless of the consequences. Faith is the spirit that fights the good fight.

Faith is a process of constant renewal, so that people can believe more than they did before, so that the knowledge of God grows within them as grace increases.

What sets Christian life apart is not blind faith, but faith that guides.

Prayer: Lord, I pray today that more people will come to you and experience faith, which can enable us to trust you in any circumstance of our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

LA FE

1 TIMOTEO 6:11-19

Pelea la buena batalla de la fe; no dejes escapar la vida eterna,

La fe es un elemento esencial para una vida victoriosa. La fe no es una cuestión lujosa, un aditamento o una prolongación innecesaria.

Pablo la presenta al joven Timoteo como una gran batalla que no puede perderse si se aspira a ganar  la contienda definitiva. La fe es la pasión de servir un ideal. Cuando se ama apasionadamente un proyecto, una meta, se demuestra con una fe sólida en ella, se predica con firmeza y se defiende con heroísmo.

La fe no quiere decir creer a pesar de la evidencia, quiere decir vida no obstante las consecuencias. Fe es el espíritu  de quien pelea la buena batalla.

La fe es un proceso de renovación constante, de modo que en cada momento pueda uno creer más que el anterior, de tal suerte que la ciencia de Dios se le crezca en la medida en que se le aumenta la gracia.

Lo peculiar de una vida cristiana no es que ande por fe, sino la fe por la cual anda.

Oración: Señor, te pido en este día que más personas se acerquen a ti y experimenten la fe, esa que puede hacernos confiar en ti en cualquier circunstancia de nuestra vida. Por Jesús, amén.

SOLACE IN SUFFERING

2 CORINTHIANS 1:1-11

For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,

so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:5 (NIV)

The word comfort amid suffering suggests to our spirits the idea of something sentimental and ingenuous. The adage that things are not as bad as they seem comes to mind.

This is not the type of comfort the apostle Paul was speaking about in today’s passage. For him comfort in no way minimizes the importance of sufferings. The idea is that pain is part of God’s great plan, and becomes meaningful in the light of Christ’s suffering, and enables the sufferer to share in the victory over death that Christ has won.

If you suffer, accept it and don’t flee from it; but don’t become obsessed with your own pain. If you are trapped in your own anxiety, your sufferings will lack meaning. But if you frame your pain in the decisive experience of the cross, you will be transformed. Your pain will then be God’s work in your life, just like Christ’s cross is God’s work in the life of the world.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your comfort in the midst of all suffering. Amen.

CONSOLACIÓN EN MEDIO DEL SUFRIMIENTO

2 CORINTIOS 1:1-11

Porque así como los sufrimientos de Cristo se desbordan sobre nosotros y nosotros sufrimos con él, así también

por medio de Cristo se desborda nuestro consuelo.

2 Corintios 1:5

La palabra consolación en medio del sufrimiento, sugiere a nuestros espíritus la idea de algo sentimental e ingenuo. El viejo argumento de que todo no nos va tan mal como parece viene a nuestra mente.

Esta no es la consolación de la que habla el apóstol Pablo en el pasaje de referencia. Para él la consolación está lejos de ser el gesto que trata de restar importancia a los sufrimientos. Es más bien aquello en virtud de lo cual el dolor se sitúa dentro del contexto del gran plan de Dios, adquiere un profundo significado a la luz del sufrimiento de Cristo, y hace participar al sufriente de la victoria que sobre la muerte Cristo ha logrado.

Si el sufrimiento te llega, acéptalo y no huyas de él; pero no te dejes obsesionar por tu propio dolor. Si te dejas aprisionar en tu propia angustia, entonces tus sufrimientos carecerán de sentido. Pero si permites que tu dolor sea encuadrado en la experiencia decisiva de la cruz, entonces serás transfigurado. Tu dolor será entonces una obra de Dios en tu vida, así como la cruz de Cristo es la obra de Dios en la vida del mundo.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por tu consuelo en medio de todo sufrimiento. Amén.

AN INTERGENERATIONAL GOD

ROMANS 8:31-39

…neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,

will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:39 (NIV)

Invariably when we make a human image of God, it is a somber adult God, or a very wise elder, who is in control of all situations. Of course our images of God are always limited and don’t exhaust the possibilities of what God is like, but I would like to challenge you today to think about our God as a boy or girl, tireless and funny, who invites us to show ourselves as we are, to share our joys, to play and sketch life in many colors. Perhaps we can also imagine God as a youth who always fills time and history with new music, a young God who never tires of fighting, loving, dreaming, and sharing. A God who never tires of learning and looking for new alternatives. A God who loves life. This way we can feel that we believe in an intergenerational God, who is also adult or elderly, who cares for, accompanies, and protects, but also loves the time he spends with his sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters.

This is the God who has been from the beginning to the end, an intergenerational God.

Prayer: We thank you, God of life, because you show yourself in different ways, breaking stereotypes and the narrowness of our minds. Help us to find you in every area of our lives. Amen.

DIOS DE GENERACIONES

ROMANOS 8:31-39

¡Nada podrá separarnos del amor que Dios

nos ha mostrado en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor!

Romanos 8:39

Casi siempre, cuando nos hacemos una imagen humana de Dios pensamos en un Dios adulto y muy serio, o en un anciano muy sabio, que tiene el control de todas las situaciones. Por supuesto que nuestras imágenes de Dios siempre serán limitadas y no agotan lo que Dios es, pero me gustaría hoy retarles a pensar en nuestro Dios niño o niña, incansable, divertido, que nos invita a mostrarnos tal como somos, a compartir nuestras alegrías, a jugar y a dibujar la vida con muchos colores. Quizás podemos pensar también en un Dios joven, que colma de música siempre nueva el tiempo y la historia, un Dios joven que no se cansa de luchar, de amar, de soñar y compartir. Un Dios que no se cansa de aprender y buscar nuevas alternativas. Un Dios enamorado de la vida.  De esta manera podemos sentir que creemos en un Dios de generaciones, que es también adulto o anciano, que cuida, acompaña, protege, pero también se deja amar y disfruta el tiempo que pasa con sus hijos e hijas, nietos y nietas.

Ese es nuestro Dios el que ha estado desde el principio y hasta el fin, el Dios de generaciones.

Oración: Te agradecemos Dios de la vida, porque te muestras de disímiles maneras, rompiendo todos los esquemas y la estrechez de nuestra mente.  Ayúdanos a descubrirte en cada etapa de nuestras vidas. Amén.

A GREAT SOURCE OF CONSOLATION

ROMANS 1:11-15

… that is, that you and I may be

mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.

Romans 1:12 (NIV)

Shared faith is a legitimate consolation. Christian faith is the source of consolation. One of the great strengths of the Christian faith is that it is always a real source of comfort in our trials and tribulations. The Biblical injunction: Console one another, is possible to carry out because there is a common faith shared by all.

We who have gone through hard experiences of pain and sadness know at firsthand what is consolation by shared faith. Those of us who undertake a ministry of consolation know that faith is the only possible source of consolation.

Those who wish to be able to provide consolation in life need to cultivate shared faith.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the faith that gives us the possibility of enjoying your grace with others. Increase our faith and be our greatest source of consolation in every situation. Amen.

UNA GRAN FUENTE DE CONSUELO

ROMANOS 1:11-15

La fe que se tiene en común  es un consuelo legítimo. La fe cristiana es fuente de consuelo. Uno de los grandes valores de la fe cristiana es que resulta siempre una genuina fuente de consuelo en nuestras tristezas y angustias. El consejo bíblico: Consolaos los unos a los otros, se hace posible porque hay una fe común mutuamente compartida por todos.

Los que hemos pasado por experiencias duras de dolor y tristeza conocemos de primera mano lo que es el consuelo de la fe en común compartida. Los que nos damos a la tarea de ministrar consolación sabemos que sólo en la fe hay una posible fuente de consuelo.

Los que quieran hacerse de una posibilidad y consuelo para la vida han de cultivar la comunión de la fe.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por la fe que nos das la posibilidad de disfrutar en comunidad por tu gracia. Aumenta nuestra fe y sé nuestra mayor fuente de consuelo en medio de cada situación. Amén.

Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.

Romans 6:13 (NIV)

Some time ago I attended a Holy Communion service. After being in communion with the Lord in prayer, singing hymns, and listening to the preaching of the Word, it was time for everybody to partake of the elements: the bread and wine. I didn’t do it, because I felt that the weight of my sins would make my participation offensive to the Lord. At the end of the service, the Pastor came up to me to ask me about my attitude. After I told him my reasons, he said to me: “There is no better time to come before the Lord than when we feel we are real sinners. Only then can He work effectively in our lives.” I have often thought about those words. They have been useful to me in my relationship with God. Since then I have been able to understand that it is best to present ourselves to God just as we are, with our weaknesses, shortcomings, and defects, and especially the ardent desire to find in Him a pardon for all our sins and the certainty of a rich and true life.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for your forgiveness, which I don’t deserve. Amen.

ESTE ES EL MEJOR MOMENTO

No entreguen su cuerpo al pecado, como instrumento para hacer lo malo. Al contrario, entréguense a Dios, como personas que han muerto y han vuelto a vivir, y entréguenle su cuerpo como instrumento para hacer lo bueno

Hace algunos años asistí a un culto de Santa Cena. Después de estar en comunión con el Señor orando, cantando himnos y oyendo la predicación de la Palabra, llegó el momento en que todos debíamos participar de los elementos: el pan y el vino. Yo no lo hice, el peso de mis pecados y un gran sentimiento de culpa me llevaron a pensar que participar de la Cena sería ofender al Señor. Terminado el culto, el Pastor se acercó a mí para preguntarme acerca de mi actitud. Después de referirle mis razones, él me respondió: “No hay mejor oportunidad para presentarse ante el Señor que cuando nos sentimos verdaderos pecadores. Solo así, Él puede obrar eficazmente en nuestras vidas”. Muchas veces he pensado en aquellas palabras. Me ha servido de mucho en mis relaciones con mi Dios. Desde entonces he podido comprender que la mejor manera de presentarnos ante Dios es tal y como somos, con nuestras debilidades, flaquezas y defectos y sobre todo con el deseo ferviente de encontrar en Él, el perdón de todos nuestros pecados y la seguridad de una vida abundante y veraz.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por tu perdón, a pesar de no merecerlo. Amén.

I assure you that the Father will give you

God enables us to believe in Jesus Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.  Faith in Jesus Christ is to believe and trust in him as Lord and Savior.  

The Bible describes faith in the following way:  to have faith is to have the full security to receive what you wait for, it is to be convinced of the reality of the things that we don’t see.  Faith is also the capacity that God gives us so that we can be saved and understand the meaning of the truths of the Holy Spirit; he guides us not only to believe in Christ, but also to believe in his Word and obey it.

By faith and prayer Daniel was saved, by faith and prayer the apostle Paul was freed.  By faith the woman with the flow of blood touched the robe of Jesus and was healed instantly.  By faith the woman of Tyre and Sidon came close to Jesus despite the ethnic and religious prejudices, and her daughter was healed… And finally, by faith Jesus suffered on the cross and by his faith he was seated at the right hand of God. 

Prayer:  Lord, give us faith needed to move mountains.  Give us trust to wait on you and to change our anguish and desperation into a song of hope.  Amen.

La Biblia describe la fe de la siguiente forma: Tener fe es tener la plena seguridad de recibir lo que se espera; es estar convencidos  de la realidad de las cosas que no vemos.  La fe es también la capacidad con que Dios nos reviste para que podamos ser salvados y comprender la significación de las verdades del Espíritu Santo; nos guía no sólo a creer en Cristo, sino también a creer en su Palabra y a obedecerle.

Por la fe y la oración se salvó Daniel, por la fe y la oración el apóstol Pablo fue libre. Por la fe la mujer con flujo de sangre tocó el manto de Jesús y al instante sanó. Por la fe la mujer de Tiro y Sidón se acercó Jesús más allá de los prejuicios étnicos y religiosos, y su hija fue sanada… En fin, por la fe Jesús sufrió en la cruz y por su fe se sentó a la diestra del trono de Dios.

Oración: Danos la fe, Señor, necesaria para mover montañas. Danos la confianza para esperar en ti y tornar nuestra angustia y desesperación en un cántico de esperanza. Amén.

Reading these verses, I remember being moved by an experience that happened to me with two classmates.  One was good, generous, friendly, always willing to share from the little that she had.  The other, in contrast, had everything that she could want, and always gave to others what she had left over.

One day I invited the two of them to attend church with me.  This environment of true Christian love that surrounded them made the wealthier classmate understand that she needed to change.  After a time, she did change, and the woman loved and helped the poor children, understanding that it was better to be poor but to help those who need it than to be rich yourself and not have the love of God. 

When we give, we always receive.  In giving, we feel more Christian, more human.  Let us remember the words of Jesus at the poor widow’s offering:  Surely, I say to you that this poor widow has given more than everyone, because everyone else gave an offering out of what they had left over, but she, in her poverty, has given all that she had to live on. 

Prayer:  Allow us, Lord to always be available to give more than to receive, knowing that thus we will be rich in your love and mercy.  Amen.

Al leer estos versículos recuerdo emocionada una experiencia que a mí  me ocurrió con dos compañeras de estudios. Una era buena, generosa, amable, siempre todas las poquitas cosas que tenía las compartía. La otra, en cambio, teniendo todo lo que deseaba, siempre daba a los demás lo que le sobraba.

Un día yo las invito a las dos para que asistieran a la Iglesia. Aquel ambiente de verdadero amor cristiano que las rodeaba hizo que aquella compañera que disfrutaba de una holgada posición económica comprendiera que era necesario cambiar. Al pasar el tiempo, la transformación no se hizo esperar y aquella mujer que amó y ayudó a los niños pobres comprendió que vale más ser pobre, pero extender las manos a quien lo necesite, que ser ricos para sí y no tener el amor de Dios.

Siempre que damos, recibimos, dando nos sentimos más cristianos, más humanos. Recordemos las palabras  de Jesús ante la ofrenda de la viuda pobre cuando dijo: De veras les digo que esta viuda pobre  ha dado más que todos, pues todos dan ofrenda de lo que les sobre; pero ella, en su pobreza, ha dado todo lo que tenía para vivir.

Oración: Permite, Señor, que podamos siempre estar dispuestos a dar más que a recibir, sabiendo que así seremos ricos en tu amor y misericordia. Amén.

We have spoken frequently in our churches about the home of Martha and Mary, visited by the Lord on his trip through the villages where he exercised his holy ministry. A few years ago, in a program sent by the National Women’s Union to celebrate the International Day of Women, there was a commentary on some situations which confront women today, and especially meshing social and home duties with the church.  

Our group came to the conclusion that nowadays it is difficult to fully complete all of the tasks that we have.  For those who work outside the home, we are asked to give volunteer hours to fulfill the goals, and housewives’ activities are difficult.  As a result, at times we do not fulfill our Christian responsibilities and we try to justify ourselves by saying that we don’t have enough time.   Christ gives us a lesson. 

On that occasion, he answered Martha saying:  Martha, Martha, you are worried and burdened by many things, but only one thing is necessary.  Mary has chosen the better part.  At times we get stuck in the roles that have been traditionally assigned to us, thinking that they are only our responsibility.  We should ask for help, we should arrange for cooperation and partnership in our family and in our work places, then we will be able to choose and perform with joy the better part.  God is extending an invitation to us today: let’s choose the better part and not neglect the tasks that we are asked to do as Christians, that are also obligations for those around us, strengthening our spiritual life as if we were at the feet of the Master. 

Prayer:  I ask you, Lord, that you allow me to serve you like Martha, and at the same time to listen to you like Mary.  Let us know how to do both things because we know that both are important.  Allow us also to develop relationships of respect and cooperation with our spouse, our sons and daughters, and our brothers and sisters of the church, so that all will feel supported by your love amid our efforts. Amen.

EL HOGAR DE MARTA Y MARÍA

LUCAS 10:38-42

… María ha escogido la mejor parte y nadie se la quitará

Se ha hablado mucho en nuestras iglesias del hogar de Marta y María, visitado por el Señor en su recorrido por las aldeas donde ejerció su santo ministerio. Hace algunos años en el programa enviado por la Unión Nacional de Mujeres para celebrar el Día Internacional de la Mujer, se comentaban algunas situaciones a las que se enfrenta la mujer de hoy, y especialmente a la compatibilización entre los deberes sociales y del hogar con la Iglesia.

Nuestro grupo llegó a la conclusión de que en la época en que vivimos nos es muy difícil cumplir cabalmente todas las tareas que se nos presentan. A las que  trabajamos en la calle se nos pide horas voluntarias para cumplir las metas, a las amas de casa se le complican sus actividades. Lo anterior trae como consecuencia que a veces no cumplimos con nuestros deberes cristianos y tratamos de justificarnos diciendo que no nos alcanza el tiempo. Cristo nos da una lección.

En aquella oportunidad Él le contestó a Marta diciéndole: Marta, Marta, estás preocupada y afligida por muchas cosas, pero sólo una cosa es necesaria. María ha escogido la mejor parte. Y es que en ocasiones nos casamos tantos con los roles que nos han asignado tradicionalmente, que pensamos que es solo nuestra responsabilidad. Pidamos ayuda, procuremos la cooperación y el compañerismo en nuestra familia, en nuestros centros laborales, para así poder escoger y realizar con gozo la mejor parte. Dios nos hace hoy una invitación: escojamos la mejor parte y no nos neguemos a las tareas que nos piden como cristianos, que a la vez son obligación para los que nos rodean, fortalecen nuestra vida espiritual, como si estuviéramos a los pies del Maestro.

Oración: Te pido, Señor, que me permitas atenderte como Marta, y a la vez escucharte como María. Que sepamos hacer las dos cosas porque sabemos que ambas son importantes. Permite que también desarrollemos relaciones de respeto y cooperación con nuestra pareja, nuestros hijos e hijas, nuestros hermanos y hermanas de la Iglesia, para que todos nos sintamos apoyados por tu amor, en medio de nuestros esfuerzos. Amén.

GOD CARES FOR US

LUKE 11:1-13

If you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will the heavenly Father give

the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

God is interested in us.  God is interested because God is our Father and our Mother. As a child returns to his father, so we should return to God.  As a child knows his mother will give him good things, so we should be sure of the love and protection of our God. 

The truth that Jesus communicates to us is very simple.  But often the simplest truths are not the easiest to accept.  This God who is our Father-Mother and listens to a child, this God who is interested in our insignificant requests, is far from the theologized God created by our own wisdom.  Nevertheless, this is the God in whom Jesus believed and to whom he teaches us to pray.

God is like a Father or a Mother who wants to share in the happiness of their sons and daughters, but who also wants to know their needs and their problems, even though God already knows them.  God is not interested in prayers that are recited with blank minds and fuzzy purposes.  The parable of the friend who calls at the inappropriate time makes us see that God likes to be bothered by the insistence of our requests.

Prayer:  Thank you, Father and Mother of life, for caring for us, our family and those around us.  Thank you for considering us your sons and daughters.  Amen.

DIOS NOS CUIDA

LUCAS 11:1-13

Pues si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas 

a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más el Padre que está en el cielo

dará el Espíritu Santo a quienes se lo pidan!

Dios se interesa por nosotros, y se interesa porque es nuestro Padre y nuestra Madre, nuestra familia. Como un niño se vuelve a su padre, así deberíamos volvernos a Dios. Como un niño sabe que su madre le dará cosas buenas, así deberíamos estar seguros del amor y de la protección de nuestro Dios.

La verdad que Jesús nos comunica es muy sencilla. Pero ocurre que las verdades más sencillas no son las mas fáciles de aceptar. Este Dios que es nuestro Padre-Madre y escucha a un niño, este Dios que se interesa por nuestras insignificantes peticiones, está muy lejos del Dios teologizado que ha creado nuestra propia sabiduría. Sin embargo, éste es el Dios en que Jesús cree y a quien Él nos enseña a orar.

Dios es como un Padre o una Madre que quiere participar de la alegría de sus  hijos e hijas, pero también quiere conocer sus necesidades, sus problemas, aun cuando los conozca de antemano. Dios no se interesa en oraciones que se pronuncian con mentes ausentes y propósitos indecisos. La parábola del amigo que llama a una hora inapropiada nos hace ver que a Dios le place verse molestado por la insistencia de nuestras súplicas.

Oración: Gracias Padre y Madre de la vida, por cuidar de nosotros, de nuestra familia y de los que me rodean. Gracias por considerarnos tus hijos e hijas. Amén.

LIVING A CONSTANT ADVENTURE

LUKE 9:57-62

Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand on the plow

and looks back is fit for God’s kingdom.”

Often there is a battle between common sense and absolute confidence in God.  Suppose that God presents us with a difficult situation and one possible solution, but neither one falls into the normal channel of human situations, what we call “common sense.” What do we do then?

 

If we say that Jesus Christ is the Lord of our lives, and He orders us to take a risky attitude, “what do we do?”  Probably we do what “the other” does in today’s text: I will follow you, but… Or we might say: “That is fine, but what will happen if I obey you?  I will obey you but let me continue using my common sense.  It is not right to jump into the darkness.”

All things that are really worthwhile and sublime are reached by taking great risks and making great sacrifices.  The Christian life is no exception.  At times there is a need to risk everything: parents, children, siblings, possessions.  Our God is exacting and demanding.  Jesus Christ takes it for granted that the one who accepts him and follows him will be ready to do his will, which would be the least reasonable thing in the world. When we apply the common-sense rule, God’s demands could be silly or crazy, but if we apply the rule of faith, we can completely trust that they are the most wise and sensible results for the well-being of the human being.  Trust in the Lord and you will joyfully have all types of adventures with Christ.

Prayer: Help me Lord to trust more in you each day. Through Jesus Christ, Amen.

VIVIENDO UNA CONSTANTE AVENTURA

LUCAS 9:57-62

El que pone la mano en el arado y sigue mirando atrás,

no sirve para el reino de Dios.

Muchas veces se plantea una batalla entre el sentido común y la absoluta confianza en Dios. Supongo que Dios nos presenta una situación difícil y una posible salida, pero tanto una como otra se salen del cauce normal de las situaciones humanas, es decir, que no responden al “sentido común.” ¿Qué haremos entonces?

Si decimos que Jesucristo es el Señor de nuestras vidas, y Él nos ordena tomar una actitud riesgosa ¿Qué haremos? Probablemente hagamos lo que “el otro” del texto de hoy: Te seguiré, pero… O podemos decir: “Está bien, pero ¿Qué sucederá si te obedezco? Te obedeceré, pero déjame hacerlo usando mi sentido común. No es correcto dar un salto en la oscuridad.”

Todas las cosas realmente útiles y grandiosas se obtienen corriendo grandes riesgos y realizando grandes sacrificios. La vida cristiana no es una excepción. A  veces hay que arriesgarlo todo: padres, hijos, hermanos, posesiones. Nuestro Dios es exigente y demandante. Jesucristo da por sentado que quien le acepta y le sigue esté dispuesto a hacer su voluntad, que pudiera ser lo menos razonable del mundo. Cuando usamos las medidas con el metro del sentido común, las demandas de Dios pudieran resultar tontas o locas, pero si usamos las medidas con el metro de la fe, podemos confiar plenamente en que son lo más sabio y sensato para el bienestar del ser humano. Confía en el Señor y corre gozosamente todo tipo de aventuras con Cristo.

Oración: Ayúdame Señor a confiar cada día más en ti. Por Cristo Jesús, amén.
