REFUGE AND STRENGTH

PSALM 46

God is our refuge and strength…  (NIV)

Psalm 46:1

This psalm is an expression of trust in God amidst trials. The psalmist expresses his security in God, even in difficult situations, when everything threatens to be destroyed. Its author employs two terms: refuge and strength. Both words belong to military vocabulary. Refuge is the place that serves to hide in, to flee from danger, to feel oneself protected. Strength also serves as a hiding place, but at the same time serves to defend oneself, that is, to go on the offensive. Generally, they are extensive and strong constructions that offer extra help to the combatants, aside from the capacity of their weapons. There are many believers who seek God, but they do it as though God were a refuge. God then serves as an amulet against difficulties, and once the danger is past – as it is in war – they can leave the refuge and continue their normal lives. 

As Christians we could say that we could approach God as our refuge, but in another sense: only to recognize our weakness, to recognize we need him, and that we want his help. But God doesn’t want us to remain passive onlookers, in anticipation of events without participating in them. God is action and wants us to act as well. He places us in the middle of the fight, and we should accept the challenge to confront each situation.

May God be both things for us: refuge, but also strength.

REFUGIO Y FORTALEZA

SALMO 46

Dios es nuestro refugio y nuestra fortaleza

Salmo 46:1

Este salmo es una expresión de confianza en Dios en medio de la prueba. El salmista expresa su seguridad en Dios, aun en situaciones difíciles, cuando todo amenaza con ser destruido.

Su autor usa dos términos: refugio y fortaleza. Ambas palabras pertenecen al vocabulario militar. El refugio es el sitio que sirve para esconderse, para huir del peligro, para sentirse protegido. La fortaleza sirve también como escondite, pero a la vez sirve para defenderse, es decir, para ir a la ofensiva. Por lo general son construcciones grandes y muy fuertes, que ofrecen a los combatientes un apoyo más, aparte de la capacidad de sus armas. Hay muchos creyentes que buscan a Dios, pero lo hacen como si Dios fuera un refugio. Dios le sirve de amuleto en contra de las dificultades, y una vez pasado el peligro, al igual que en la guerra, pueden salir del refugio y seguir andando en su vida normal. Pudiéramos decir que, como cristianos, podemos acudir a Dios como nuestro refugio, pero en otro sentido: solamente para reconocer nuestra debilidad, para reconocer que le necesitamos y que queremos su ayuda. Pero Dios no quiere que nos quedemos cruzados de brazos, a la expectativa de los acontecimientos sin participar en ellos. Dios es acción, y quiere que nosotros también actuemos. Nos coloca en medio de la lucha y debemos aceptar el reto de ir de frente a cada situación.

Procuremos que Dios sea ambas cosas para nosotros: refugio, pero también fortaleza.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por ser mi refugio y fortaleza en medio de las tribulaciones. Amén.
