HERE AM I, LORD

EXODUS 3:1-14

I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you

Exodus 3:12 (NRSV)

The apostle said rightly: To go in front of the others, it is necessary to see more than they can. In no other biblical person is this clearer than in the figure of Moses, the barefoot guide. The life of the great law-giver and head of Israel presents one of the most beautiful themes about which the pen of a biblical historian could write It is not possible to speak of the people of Israel and avoid the person of Moses.

God called Moses to serve him in a very simple manner, without the mediation of a prophetic offering or the self-aggrandizement of a human. Rather, his sincere confession that he was incapable of the work put into his hands, was a measure of humility. God called Moses to serve him, and Moses was brief in his response: Here am I.

On Horeb, the Mount of God, there began a glowing accomplishment which would only be eclipsed atop Mount Nebo when the work had been completed, when the mission had been fulfilled. They were hard years, but full of rich experiences; there were terrible trials, but in all of them they emerged victorious with the help of the one who went with him.

Today’s biblical passage raises the need to give an accounting of our attitude before God’s continuing call. Moses had many things to take precedence over God’s call. He had plenty of excuses that he had prepared to use as an argument to avoid the work, but God commanded him in his name and for his glory to carry out the work.

Perhaps today God is calling us as he did Moses to complete a work of love in the world. Let’s take off our sandals and imitate the barefoot guide, saying, Here am I.

Prayer: Here am I, Lord; I want to answer your call. Amen.

Yo estaré contigo, y ésta es la señal de que yo mismo te envío

Éxodo 3:12

Dijo el apóstol y con mucha razón: ...Para ir delante de los demás es necesario ver más que ellos. En ningún personaje bíblico se hace más patente esta realidad que en la figura de Moisés, el guía descalzo. La vida del gran legislador y jefe de Israel presenta uno de los más bellos asuntos de que puede ocuparse la pluma del historiador bíblico. No es posible hablar del pueblo de Israel y soslayar la persona de Moisés.

Dios llamó a Moisés para que le sirviera, le llamó de la manera más simple, sin que mediara en ello el ofrecimiento del profeta o el auto ensalzamiento del hombre. Más bien, fue medida de humildad su sincera confesión de incapacidad de la obra que se le ponía en las manos. Dios llamó a Moisés para que le sirviera y Moisés fue escueto en su respuesta: Heme aquí.

En Horeb, monte de Dios, comienza una reluciente ejecutoria, que solo va a eclipsarse en lo alto del Monte Nebo, cuando la obra ya estaba realizada, cuando la misión había sido cumplida. Fueron años duros, pero llenos de ricas experiencias; fueron pruebas terribles, pero en todas ellas salió victorioso con la ayuda de aquel que marchaba con él.

El pasaje bíblico de hoy nos plantea la necesidad de hacer un recuento de nuestra actitud ante el continuo llamado de Dios. Moisés tenía muchas cosas que anteponer al llamamiento de Dios. Le sobraban excusas que se aprestó a esgrimir como argumento para no acometer la obra, pero Dios le mandó en su nombre y para su gloria a realizar su obra.

Quizás hoy Dios nos está llamando como a Moisés para realizar una obra de amor en el mundo. Quitémonos nuestras sandalias e imitemos al guía descalzo, diciendo: Heme aquí.

Oración: Heme aquí Señor, quiero responder a tu llamado. Amén.
