DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD

GENESIS 3

But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back,

and she became a pillar of salt

Genesis 19:26 (NRSV)

“Don’t take that knife or you’ll cut yourself,” I told my little son when he reached out his hand to take it. After a while he came running toward me crying and showing me a little finger covered with blood. When I turned my back, he disobeyed and took the knife. There in his little cut finger was the consequence of his disobedience.

Disobedience to God is the basic cause of our sins. The sin of our first parents was disobedience. As today’s text says, God warned them not to eat of the tree which was in the middle of the garden, but they disobeyed God and ate. As a result, they suffered for their disobedience, for their sin. In the same way, Lot’s wife, because of her disobedience, also suffered death. The Bible shows us many examples of people who, while believing in God, continued occasionally to disobey his teachings and alienate themselves from his love: Moses struck the rock, David commanded the death of Uriah the Hittite so that he could marry Bathsheba, Jonah didn’t follow the command to go to Nineveh. . . etc.

Let’s not blame God for our sufferings, sorrows, or unhappiness. If we search only a little bit, we will see that the root of all our ills is in our disobedience to God; that is our sin.

Prayer: Lord, thank you not only for your blessings but also for your reproaches and negations. Help me to understand that they are for my own good. Amen.

GÉNESIS 3

Pero la mujer de Lot miró hacia atrás y allí mismo

quedó convertida en una estatua de sal.

Génesis 19:26

No tomes ese cuchillo que puedes cortarte, le dije a mi pequeño hijo cuando vi que extendía su mano para tomarlo. Al poco rato vino corriendo hasta donde yo estaba, llorando y enseñándome un dedito lleno de sangre. Cuando yo volví la espalda desobedeció y tomó el cuchillo. Allí, en su dedito cortado, estaba la consecuencia de su desobediencia.

La desobediencia a Dios es la causa fundamental de nuestros pecados. El pecado de nuestros primeros padres fue la desobediencia.  Como dice el texto de hoy, Dios les advirtió que no comieran del árbol que estaba en el medio del huerto. Pero ellos desobedecieron a Dios y comieron. Por supuesto, sufrieron por su desobediencia, por su pecado. Como la mujer de Lot, que, por su desobediencia, también sufrió la muerte. La Biblia nos muestra muchos ejemplos de personas que, aunque creían en Dios y le siguieron, en ocasiones desobedecieron sus enseñanzas y se alejaron de su amor: Moisés hirió la peña, David mandó a matar a Urías heteo para tomar a Betsabé por esposa, Jonás no siguió el mandato de ir a Nínive etc.

No culpemos a Dios por nuestros sufrimientos, dolores o infelicidades. Si buscamos un poquito veremos que la raíz de todos nuestros males está en nuestra desobediencia a Dios, ese es nuestro pecado.

Oración: Gracias Señor, no solo por tus bendiciones, sino también por tus regaños y negaciones. Ayúdame a entender que son por mi bien. Amén.
