BAPTISM

Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

And the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”  (NIV)

            Baptism is one of the sacraments of our church and is the beginning of our faith life in Christ, a life of constant transformation. John was baptized and said, “The people should turn from their sins to God, so as  to experience his mercy and approval.” He was preparing the people for the Messiah’s arrival with baptism by water and said “But he who comes after me will baptize with fire.”

            And later, the so awaited arrived for everyone. Did they believe Jesus needed to be baptized, or did he need to repent? Clearly not, but being the savior, he wanted to begin by accompanying his fellow sinners who were looking for the way to forgiveness. Jesus, on receiving John’s baptism, asserted that his way is the good. That is to say, seek justice and reform your own life. At the moment of being baptized, he received God’s call, inviting him to begin his ministry of salvation, and he made him his Son in the biblical sense: the Prophet and King of his people.

            Jesus also received the fullness of the Spirit that consecrates the prophets and works miracles. Jesus has forever enjoyed this plenitude of spirit which has maintained him in a unique relation with God. Now receive another communication from the Spirit: be a prophet and servant of the Father.

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, may we, as Jesus’s brothers, also be able to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and be faithful to you at all times. Amen.

EL BAUTISMO

Lucas 3:15-16, 21-22

Y el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre El en forma visible, como una paloma, y se oyó una voz del cielo, que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado, a quien he elegido.

            El bautismo es uno de los sacramentos de nuestra Iglesia, y es el inicio de nuestra vida de fe en Cristo, una vida de constante transformación. Juan estaba bautizando y decía: “el pueblo debe volverse de sus pecados a Dios para experimentar su misericordia y aprobación”. Estaba preparando a las personas para la llegada del Mesías, el bautizaba con agua, pero el que venía detrás de  él  bautizaría con fuego.

            Y llegó el tan esperado por todos. ¿Creen que Jesús necesitaba bautizarse o necesitaba arrepentirse?; pues claro que no; pero siendo el salvador, quiere empezar por mezclarse con sus hermanos pecadores que buscan el camino del perdón. Jesús al recibir el bautismo de Juan, afirma que su camino es el bueno, es decir, buscar la justicia y reformar su propia vida. En el momento de ser bautizado, recibió el llamado de Dios que lo invitaba a empezar su ministerio de salvación, y lo hacía Hijo suyo en el sentido bíblico: profeta y rey de su pueblo.

            Jesús recibe también la plenitud del Espíritu que consagra a los profetas y que obra los milagros. Desde siempre Él gozaba de esa plenitud del Espíritu que lo mantenía en una relación única con Dios; ahora recibe otra comunicación del Espíritu para ser el profeta y el servidor del Padre.

 

Oración: Padre amado, permite que como hermanos de Jesús también podamos recibir el bautismo del Espíritu Santo y ser fieles a ti en todo momento. Amén.
