EVERYTHING IS MUSIC

Psalm 66:4

test everything; hold fast to what is good

            Everybody has their own musical taste, from classical music to heavy metal, from country to hip hOp, from salsa to reggaeton, from tango to merengue. What a great variety of rhythms for all ages and times. Music is one of the most important cultural elements. From ancient times it has been used to unite countries behind a national anthem and to mark the march of armies into battle. It has been used to cheer those who are depressed and to rock a baby to sleep. It has been used to show feelings of love and also to express the sorrow of a broken relationship. Everything is filled with music.

            God gave humans the talents and the creativity to develop every type of artistic expression. Music is a gift from our Creator. The heavens are filled with worship and musical notes. For that reason it is not possible to say that there is good music or bad. There are different tastes and styles, but music in itself is neither good nor bad. The issue is to define its purpose, what it is to be used for.

            A practical way to find out is to know what the lyrics of the songs we listen to say and the feelings they generate in our lives. Do they contradict the values that the Bible teaches? Let’s enjoy the melodies we like the most, but let’s be aware of what we are listening to.

Prayer: Lord, today I give thanks for that marvelous creation that you made in music. Let us use it for your glory and honor, and for praising you. Amen.

TODO ES MUSICA

Examinadlo todo; retened lo bueno

            Cada persona tiene su propio gusto musical. Desde la música clásica al heavy metal, del country al hip hop, de la salsa al reggaetón, del tango al merengue. ¡Una gran variedad de ritmos para todas las edades y tiempos! La música es uno de los elementos culturales más importantes. Desde épocas remotas se ha utilizado para unir  a los países detrás de un himno nacional y para marcar la marcha de los ejércitos en las batallas. Se ha empleado para animar a quienes están deprimidos y para acompañar a un bebé mientras duerme. Se ha usado para manifestar sentimientos de amor y también para expresar el lamento de una relación quebrada. Todo está lleno de música.

            Dios le dio al ser humano los talentos y la creatividad para desarrollar todo tipo de expresiones artísticas. La música es un regalo de nuestro Creador. El cielo está lleno de adoración y notas musicales. Por eso nadie podríía decir que hay una música buena y otra mala. Existen diferentes gustos y estilos, pero la música en sí no tiene nada de malo. El asunto es definir su propósito, para qué se utiliza.

            Una manera práctica de averiguarlo es conocer qué dice la letra de las canciones que escuchamos y los sentimientos que genera en nuestra vida. ¿Contradicen los valores que enseña la Biblia? Disfrutemos de las melodías  que más nos gustan, pero estemos atentos a todo lo que escuchamos.

 

Oración: Señor, hoy te doy gracias por esa maravillosa creación que hiciste en la música. Permite que la podamos usar para tu gloria y honra, y para alabanza a ti. Amén.
