READING THE BIBLE

Nehemiah 8:2-10

So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

            This first public reading of the Law marks a very important date in sacred history. Up until this moment, the people of Israel lived their faith by praying and participating in the ceremonies of the Temple. They received from the mouth of the priests or prophets sentences and predictions. There was no sense of need to read a “Bible.” At that point several books of the Old Testament already existed, but they were kept in the Temple or in the palace of the kings; they weren’t in the reach of the public, nor were they the basis of their faith.

            Now, for a change, new needs presented themselves and prophets no longer were present as before, so from now on reading, meditation, and interpretation of the holy scripture were necessary. It was the beginning of a new period of time in which the Bible would be a book for everyone and the norm of their lives.

            The Christian faith can only gain strength from a word of God read and heard not only at a personal level but, much more, as a community. Think for a moment: Do we read with attention to God’s Word? Is the Bible our standard of faith? Do we gather as a community to reflect on God’s Word?

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, give us an irresistible desire to read your word; give us the wisdom and the discernment needed to understand it and apply it in our lives. Amen.

LA LECTURA DE LA BIBLIA

NEHEMÍAS 8:2-10

….Ellos leían en voz alta el libro de la Ley de Dios, y lo traducían para que se entendiera claramente la lectura.

Nehemías 8:8

            Esta primera lectura pública de la Ley, marca una fecha muy importante de la historia sagrada. Hasta ese momento, el pueblo de Israel vivía su fe rezando y participando en las ceremonias del templo. Recibíía de boca de los sacerdotes y profetas sentencias o prédicas. No sentía la necesidad de leer una “Biblia”. En aquel momento ya existían varios libros del Antiguo Testamento, pero se conservaban en el templo o en el palacio de los reyes: no estaban al alcance del pueblo, ni eran la base de su fe.

            Ahora, en cambio, se notan nuevas exigencias y ya no se presentan profetas como antes, en adelante la comunidad necesitará de la lectura, la meditación y la interpretación del libro sagrado; comienza una nueva época en que la Biblia será el libro de todos y la norma de su fe.

            La fe cristiana no puede cobrar fuerzas sino a partir de una palabra de Dios leída y escuchada no solo a nivel personal sino, mucho más, de forma comunitaria. Meditemos por un momento, ¿leemos con atención la palabra de Dios? Es la Biblia nuestra norma de fe? ¿Nos reunimos comunitariamente para reflexionar sobre la palabra de Dios?

 

Oración: Padre amado, danos un deseo irresistible para leer tu palabra; danos la sabiduría y el discernimiento necesario para entenderla y aplicarla en nuestras vidas. Amén.
