JOY AND GRATITUDE

Deuteronomy 16:1-17

They must not appear before the Lord’s presence empty-handed. Each one should have his gift in hand, in precise measure with the blessing the Lord your God gives you.

            Joy and gratitude are two aspects of the festival in ancient Israel that should not be separated.  To start with, would it not be good for us to recognize that we are who we are because God is blessing us?  As we continue to think about it, we discover just how many are the blessings of God in our lives.  And when we feel most blessed, how much more will we be moved to gratitude.  Could it be that at the times when we are unable to express our gratitude adequately, the word of God summons us to bring our offerings according to the material goods with which the Lord has blessed us?  Whether it is because God commands it, or because we spontaneously feel called to offer, to give, to share, or to help… these are the attitudes that express our gratitude.  And at the same time, they free us.  They free us from holding on too much to the material goods God gives us.  And this produces joy, that joy which we feel at being freed from being so tied to material goods.  And also, the joy which comes from serving the community with contributions of gratitude. 

            It would be good to return to the feeling of celebration in the Old Testament, and not only to decorate the altar with symbols of our gratitude, but to bring our offering of thanksgiving according to the blessings we have received. 

 

Prayer:  Thank you Lord, for the many blessings we have received from you.  We pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

ALEGRÍA Y AGRADECIMIENTO

Deuteronomio 16:1-17

Nadie deberá presentarse ante el Señor con las manos vacías, sino que cada uno llevará sus ofrendas conforme a los bienes que el Señor su Dios lo haya bendecido.

Deuteronomio 16:16b-17

            Alegría y agradecimiento, dos aspectos de la fiesta que en el antiguo Israel no debían separarse. ¿No nos haría bien a nosotros también reconocer, para empezar, que con lo que somos y tenemos Dios nos está bendiciendo? Cuanto más nos ponemos a pensar en ello, descubrimos cuántas son las bendiciones de Dios en nuestras vidas. Y cuanto más nos sintamos bendecidos, tanto más estaremos movidos a gratitud. ¿Será que a veces nuestra gratitud no logra expresarse adecuadamente, que la Palabra de Dios debe convocarnos a llevar nuestras ofrendas conforme a los bienes con los que el Señor nos haya bendecido? Sea porque Dios lo manda, o porque lo sentimos espontáneamente,  ofrendar, dar, compartir, ayudar...son actitudes que expresan nuestra gratitud. Y a la vez nos liberan. Nos liberan de aferrarnos demasiado a los bienes que Dios nos da. Y eso produce alegría, la que sentimos nosotros mismos por habernos liberado del apego a lo material. Y alegría también en la comunidad a la que sirven nuestros aportes de gratitud.

            Sería bueno volver al sentido de la celebración del Antiguo Testamento, y no solamente adornar el altar con símbolos de nuestra gratitud, sino llevar nuestra ofrenda de agradecimiento conforme  a las bendiciones recibidas.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, por tus muchas bendiciones recibidas. Oramos en el nombre de Jesús, amén.
