COUNT ON ME, LORD!

Nehemiah 1

…and replied, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor with you, please send me to Judah, to the city of my family’s graves so that I may rebuild it. “

Nehemiah 2:5 (CEB)

              This text shows us the qualities that we should have as Christians.  Who was Nehemiah?  He had been born when the people of Israel were in exile in Babylon, he had not grown up in his own land, and he had an important position in the palace of the Persian King—he was his cup bearer. He had a privileged life, nevertheless, when he learned of the terrible conditions that his people lived in, he felt engaged. He showed his unconditional disposition to serve his God and his brothers and sisters.  Knowing that the Jews in Jerusalem suffered misery and humiliation, and that the city was destroyed, he cried, fasted, and prayed.  He identified himself with the suffering of his countrymen.

              His first action was to pray.  He was sure that God was watching for his people and would give an answer.  After some time in prayer, he knew what to do.  Nehemiah did not stop with crying, fasting, and praying, but he took action.  God needed him to restore the walls of Jerusalem and the spiritual life of Israel. 

              Presented with these actions of Nehemiah, we should ask ourselves:  Do we really feel the pain of our neighbor?  Are we truly interested in remediating the evils of our community?  Do we pray with necessary devotion, faith, and persistence?  Are we available to fully participate in serving?  Let us look inside ourselves and review to what extent we are consistent with our faith and not only living as Sunday believers in church.  Let us learn from Nehemiah.  

 

Prayer:  Lord, today we ask you to help us to secure our faith in prayer.  May we not be indifferent to the needs of our community.  Amen.

¡Cuenta, conmigo, Señor

Nehemías 1

…y dije al rey: Si le place al rey, y tu siervo ha hallado gracia delante de ti, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad de mis padres, y la reedificaré.

Nehemías 2:5

            Este texto nos revela las cualidades que debemos tener los cristianos. ¿Quién era Nehemías? Había nacido cuando el pueblo de Israel estaba en el exilio en Babilonia, no  había crecido en su tierra y ocupaba una posición importante en la casa del rey persa, era su copero. Tenía  una vida privilegiada, sin embargo,  cuando conoce las terribles condiciones en que vive su pueblo, se sintió comprometido. Él mostró su incondicional disposición para servir a su Dios y sus hermanos. Al conocer que los judíos en Jerusalén sufrían miseria y humillación, y que la ciudad estaba destruida, llora, ayuna y ora. Se conmueve ante el sufrimiento de sus compatriotas.

            La primera acción fue orar. Estaba seguro que Dios velaba por su pueblo y le daría una respuesta. Después de un tiempo  en oración  supo qué hacer. Nehemías no se limitó a llorar, ayunar y orar, sino que pasó a la acción. Se fue a donde lo necesitaba Dios para restaurar los muros de Jerusalén y la vida espiritual de Israel.

            Frente a estas acciones debemos preguntarnos: ¿Sentimos nosotros realmente el dolor del prójimo? ¿Nos interesamos verdaderamente en remediar los males de nuestra comunidad? ¿Oramos con la devoción, la fe y la persistencia necesaria? ¿Nos disponemos a participar de lleno en servir? Miremos nuestro interior y revisemos en qué medida somos consecuentes con nuestra fe y no solamente creyentes de domingo en la iglesia. Aprendamos de Nehemías.

 

Oración: Señor, en este día te pedimos que nos ayudes a afianzar nuestra fe en oración. Que no pasemos indiferentes ante las necesidades de nuestra comunidad. Amén.
