THE WOMAN IN JESUS’ LIFE

John 2:1-11

When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

John 2:3 (NRSV)

            Jesus and his family were invited to the wedding at Cana. Yes, Jesus was at the wedding, in the midst of singing and dancing! It seems that he came to sanctify with his presence not only our  parties and conviviality but also the marital union.

            At the party something incredible happened. The wine ran out, but someone who knew Jesus, understood and believed in him: Mary, his mother. How did it occur to her to ask for a miracle? And how did she know that Jesus would work miracles? She didn’t ask for the conversion of fishermen, nor bread for the hungry; she only wanted a miracle, or something of the sort, to get the groom out of trouble.

            Jesus replied with a phrase, which directed to a stranger would be a reproach, but spoken to his mother in a different tone, showed the familiarity and a mutual comprhension that goes beyond word. Apparently, Jesus didn’t intend to begin this way at this time, but his spirit recognized  the spirit that spoke through his mother’s word and granted it this first miraculous sign. This was how he demonstrated his work to those who were beginning to discover him. Mary, a woman, intervened to hasten the arrival of the Good News, and her last words were, “Do whatever he tells you.”

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, grant that we may be able, like Mary, to be faithful to Jesus and to always be at his side to recognize his intentions. Amen.

LA MUJER EN LA VIDA DE JESÚS

Juan 2:1-11

 

Se acabó el vino, y la madre de Jesús le dijo: ya no tienen vino.

Juan 2:3

            Jesús y su familia fueron invitados a las bodas de Caná, ¡Sí, Jesús estuvo en la boda, entre cantos y bailes! Parece que viniera a santificar con su presencia tanto nuestras fiestas y convivencias, como la unión conyugal.

            En la fiesta sucedió algo increíble, se acabó el vino; pero alguien que se encontraba con Jesús lo comprendía y creía en Él: María, su madre. ¿Cómo se le ocurrió pedirle un milagro? ¿Y cómo sabía que Jesús haría milagros? María no pedía la conversión de los pecadores, ni pan para los hambrientos; solamente quería un milagro o algo por el estilo para sacar de apuros al novio.

            Jesús le contestó con una frase, que dirigida a una extraña sería un reproche, pero, dicha a su madre en tono diferente, demuestra la familiaridad y una comprensión mutua que va más allá de las palabras. Aparentemente Jesús no pensaba empezar de esta forma ni en este momento, pero su espíritu reconoció al espíritu que hablaba por su madre, y le concedió esa primera señal milagrosa. Fue así como Jesús manifestó su obra a los que empezaban a descubrirlo. María, una mujer, intervenía para apresurar los comienzos del Evangelio, y sus últimas palabras fueron: Hagan todo lo que Él les diga.

 

Oración: Padre amado, permite que podamos, como María, ser fieles a Jesús y estar siempre a su lado para conocer sus designios. Amén.
