Psalm  138

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me

Psalm 138:8a (NRSV)

            First of all, note the joyful certainty with which the Psalmist witnesses the effect of prayer on his own life. While trying to plead with God to change external circumstances, his interior world stays calm and imperturbable.

            Prayer is a conversation, but not merely conversation for its own sake. When we desire something, we pray. By its very nature, the element of petition belongs to the impulse that leads to praying. Now then, petition runs the risk of colliding with the laws of nature. An old rabbi told this story: A mother had two sons, the one a gardener and the other a potter. The gardener said, “Mother,  pray to God for rain for my flowers.” But the potter said, “Mother, pray for the sun to come out to dry my pots.” The mother loved them both equally. Would she pray for sun or rain?

            God is not going to remake his world simply because we ask him to; it is not that he cannot but that he must not. God does not substitute our desires for his plans. Even though we have full confidence in God’s power and freedom, the same humility that is a product of that confidence keeps us from any presumptuous request. Professor Bowne said, “A prayer which limits itself to praying for the fulfillment of god’s will is much more human and Christian that the narrow and egotistic prayer about our immediate and urgent needs.”

 

Prayer: Eternal God, lead us to a blessed communion with you. May all our petty fear dissipate in the joy of your perfect love. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Tú Señor, cumplirás en mí tus planes…

Salmo 138:8a

            Nótese primeramente la gozosa certidumbre con que el salmista testimonia el efecto de la oración en su propia vida. Al tratar de rogar a Dios para que cambiara circunstancias exteriores, su mundo interior se mantiene tranquilo e imperturbable.

            La oración es una conversación, pero no mera conversación por sí misma. Cuando queremos algo, oramos. El elemento de la petición pertenece, por su propia naturaleza, al impulso que lleva a orar. Ahora bien, la petición corre el riesgo de ir a estrellarse contra las leyes naturales. Un antiguo rabino presentaba esta historia: Una madre tuvo dos hijos: uno jardinero, el otro alfarero. Decía el jardinero: “Madre, ruega a Dios para que me dé lluvia para mis flores”. Pero el alfarero decía: “Madre, ora para que salga el sol y seque mis vasijas”. La madre les amaba por igual. ¿Habría de orar por el sol o por la lluvia?

            Dios no ha de rehacer su mundo porque sencillamente nosotros se lo pidamos, no porque no pueda hacerlo, sino porque no debe hacerlo; Dios no sustituye sus planes por nuestros deseos. Aunque tengamos plena confianza en el poder y la libertad de Dios, la misma humildad que es producto de esa confianza nos impedirá toda presuntuosa petición. El profesor Bowne afirmaba: “Una oración que se limita a pedir que se cumpla la voluntad de Dios es mucho más humana y más cristiana que la estrecha y egoísta plegaria sobre nuestras necesidades inmediatas y urgentes”.

 

Oración: Eterno Dios, dirígenos hacia una bendita comunión contigo. Que todo nuestro miedo mezquino se disipe con la alegría de tu perfecto amor. En el nombre de Jesucristo. Amén.
