WE GIVE DRINK

John 4: 1-26

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

John 4: 7 (NRSV)

            This text suggests that Jesus deliberately took the road through Samaria to go to Galilee. It was an exhausting time of day, that makes it clear to us that he was tired. This then is the story of the encounter between a Jewish man and a Samaritan woman, who was alone at the well. Contrary to the customs of the day, he not only stops to rest, but rather decides to talk with this stranger.

            I think we can reflect on our own life and faith journeys. We could imagine pausing, stopping to meditate on what we have done and what we are doing, but above all to reflect on how we feel, what needs we have, what help we would ask for to continue our path, what taboos keep us from doing something that would be beneficial.

            Jesus stopped and felt thirsty, he needed water and he asked that simple woman for it. Give me a drink, he said without fear. Let us stop and recognize our needs. Perhaps God manifests himself to us through those we least expect to quench our thirst.

 

Prayer: Father, we ask that you unite us more and more in this journey of needs and problems but also in joys and dreams. Give us strength to ponder before we continue our journey. Amen.

DEMOS DE BEBER

En eso llegó a sacar agua una mujer de Samaria, y Jesús le dijo: Dame un poco de agua.

            El texto sugiere que Jesús toma deliberadamente el camino de Samaria para ir a Galilea. Era una hora agotadora en el día, se nos deja claro que sentía cansancio. Esta es pues la historia del encuentro de un hombre judío con una mujer samaritana, que estaba sola en un pozo. Contrariamente a las costumbres de su tiempo, no solo se detiene a descansar, sino que decide conversar con la desconocida.

            Pienso que podemos reflexionar en nuestros caminos de vida y de fe. Pudiéramos imaginariamente hacer una pausa, detenernos a meditar sobre lo que hemos hecho y lo que estamos haciendo, pero sobre todo reflexionar acerca de cómo nos sentimos, qué necesidades tenemos, que ayuda deseamos pedir para seguir caminando, qué tabúes nos impiden hacer algo que resultaría de beneficio.

            Jesús se detuvo y sintió sed, él necesitaba agua y la pide a aquella sencilla mujer. Dame de beber, dijo sin temor. Hagamos un alto y reconozcamos nuestras necesidades. Quizás Dios se nos manifiesta a través de quienes menos imaginemos para calmar nuestra sed.

 

Oración: Padre, te pedimos que nos unas cada vez más en este camino de necesidades y problemas, pero también de alegrías y sueños. Danos fuerzas para detenernos y para continuar nuestros pasos. Amén.
