SOMETHING NOT TO FORGET

Proverbs 3: 21-27

Do not withhold good from those who to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.

            I hope that it is not the same everywhere in Cuba but, where I live, many people have forgotten the meaning of “doing a favor.” I know that since the nineties we began to live contradictory values in Cuba. On the one hand we find the solidarity that made us survive, and on the other, cases in which the phrase: “giving away died” has become popular. This illustrates a new way of relating, this time on the basis of economic or any other kind of interest.

            The truth is that more and more cases abound in which, whoever solves a problem for you,  tells you: “repay me what you want.” It is becoming increasingly difficult to hear: “it’s nothing, just a thank you”.

            God invites us today to practice kindness and solidarity, to offer our services altruistically, whenever it is in our hands to do so. Let us put aside ulterior motives or expediency. Let us treat others with the same love with which we wish to be treated.

 

Prayer:  Our God, help us this Advent to renew our commitments to you. We want to love as you love us. May we keep our hands always outstretched. In the name of Jesus, whom we always wait for to break into our lives. Amen.

ALGO PARA NO OLVIDAR

Proverbios 3: 21-27

No niegues un favor a quien te lo pida, si en tu mano está otorgarlo.

Proverbios 3:27

            Tengo la esperanza de que no en todos los lugares de Cuba sea igual pero, donde vivo, mucha gente ha olvidado el significado de “hacer un favor”. Sé que desde los años noventa comenzamos a vivir situaciones contradictorias en Cuba: por un lado la solidaridad que nos hizo sobrevivir y al mismo tiempo casos en los que se popularizó la frase: “regalado se murió”, que ilustra una nueva forma de relacionarse, esta vez sobre la base del interés económico o de cualquier otra índole.

            Lo cierto es que cada vez más abundan los casos en los que, al menos, quien te resuelve un problema, luego te dice: “dame lo que tú quieras”. Y cada vez se torna más difícil escuchar: “no es nada, sólo las gracias”.

            Dios nos invita hoy a practicar la amabilidad y la solidaridad, a brindar nuestros servicios de manera altruista, siempre que esté en nuestras manos el hacerlo. Dejemos a un lado las segundas intenciones o las conveniencias. Tratemos a los demás con el mismo amor con el que deseamos ser tratados.

 

Oración: Dios nuestro, ayúdanos en este Adviento a renovar nuestros compromisos contigo. Queremos amar como tú nos amas. Permite que tengamos nuestras manos siempre extendidas. En el nombre de Jesús, a quien esperamos siempre para que irrumpa en nuestras vidas. Amén.
