LISTENING ATTENTIVELY TO OTHERS

Mark 13:3-11

… For it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. (NIV)

            “Your feelings are revealed  in the manner in which you express yourself” are the words an old teacher of my early years would repeat to me on various occasions. He was right, since the experiences lived much later made me understand the importance of the spoken word in search of what nests inside the mind.   

            That was Freud’s great discovery: to detect by listening to what the patient was saying, the secret motivations of his affected personality; “Let him speak and you will realize his most hidden intentions.”

            In the history of the Christian church, to communicate the central truths of the faith is always a task of first order, whether it is by written or oral means. The New Testament contains a countless number of expressions that we could well call “minor confessions or credos” that would serve much later to communicate a transgenerational faith in Jesus Christ.

            So it’s interesting that when the disciples asked the master for a sign or signal, Jesus offers us one: that of the word, the sign of communication.

 

Prayer: Lord, may my tongue communicate my faith in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

ESCUCHANDO ATENTAMENTE A LOS OTROS

Marcos 13:3-11

Porque no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu Santo

Marcos 13:11b

            “En la manera en que te expresas se descubren tus sentimientos”, me repetía en varias oportunidades un antiguo maestro de mis años tempranos. Tenía razón, pues las experiencias vividas mucho después me hicieron comprender la importancia de la palabra hablada en busca de lo que se anida en el interior de la mente.

            Ese fue el gran descubrimiento de Freud: detectar, escuchando lo que el paciente decía, las motivaciones secretas de su personalidad afectada; “dejadlo hablar, y te darás cuenta de sus más escondidas intenciones”.

            En la historia de la iglesia cristiana, comunicar, ya fuese de manera escrita u oral, las verdades centrales de la fe resultó siempre tarea de primer orden. El Nuevo Testamento contiene un sin número de expresiones que bien podemos llamar pequeñas confesiones o credos, que servirían más tarde para comunicar de generación en generación la fe en Jesucristo.

            Resulta interesante que cuando los discípulos piden al Maestro una señal, Jesús les ofrezca una: la de la palabra, la señal de la comunicación.

 

Oración: Señor, permite que mi lengua esté dispuesta a comunicar mi fe en ti.  Por Jesús  te lo pedimos, amén.
