BE CAREFUL, BE CAREFUL

2 Peter 3: 13-18

Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard …

            Most people recognize the season of Advent because the color of the liturgical cloths in the Temple is changed to purple and Christmas decorations make their appearance. This phrase invites us to be awake because–who is coming, the Christ Child? Of course this text is not referring to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, which has already happened! It is referring to something or someone that we believers are waiting for: to the invitation that the Lord makes to each one of us to meet Him at the end of the story. This text responds to the expectations that animated the community of faith in the early days, when they sensed that the end of the world was at hand

            The Word of God constantly invites us to stay awake. Jesus himself always warned us of the need to be vigilant, insisting that God will ask us to give an account when the reunion occurs. The opposite of alertness is distraction. Unfortunately our modern world, and especially this pre-Christmas season, fills us with transitory images and sensations, which detract from the attention necessary to enter more deeply into the mystery of God. The danger that threatens us is that of living distracted and forgetting the essential, that there is a better world to be made.

 

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for this time of Advent. May it be for us as the dawning of a new life in you. Amen.

ATENTO, ATENTO

2 Pedro 3: 13-18

Así que ustedes, queridos hermanos, puesto que ya saben esto de antemano, manténganse alertas…

2 Pedro 3: 17a

            La mayoría de las personas reconocen el tiempo de Adviento porque se cambia a morado el color de los paños litúrgicos en el Templo y hacen su aparición los adornos navideños. Esta frase nos invita a estar despiertos porque llega…  ¿quién? ¿El Niño Jesús?  ¡Por supuesto que este texto no se está refiriendo al nacimiento de Jesús en Belén, que ya sucedió! Se está refiriendo a algo o a alguien que los creyentes esperamos: a la invitación que el Señor nos hace a cada uno de nosotros para el encuentro con Él al final de la historia. Este texto responde a las expectativas que animaban a la comunidad de fe en los primeros tiempos, cuando presentían que el final del mundo estaba por llegar.

            La Palabra de Dios nos hace una invitación constante a mantenernos  bien despiertos. Jesús mismo siempre alertó sobre la necesidad de velar, insistiendo que Dios va a pedirnos cuenta cuando ocurra el reencuentro. Lo opuesto a la atención es la distracción. Por desgracia nuestro mundo moderno, y sobre todo este tiempo pre-navideño, nos llena imágenes y sensaciones transitorias, que nos restan la atención necesaria para entrar más profundamente en el misterio de Dios. El peligro que nos amenaza es el de vivir distraídos y olvidar lo esencial, que hay un mundo mejor por hacer. Adviento nos invita hacer algo, aunque sea pequeño, para mejorar la vida de muchas personas en este mundo.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, por este tiempo de Adviento. Permite que sea para nosotros como el amanecer a una nueva vida en ti. Amén.
