Gyge’s Ring

Psalm 119

Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.

Psalm 119:2 (NIV)

            Plato, in the second book of the Republic, tells a story of Gyges, a peasant who finds a ring that gives him the ability to become invisible. So, a man, with the possibility of remaining invisible up until the right moment could incur acts that allow him to kill his king and take his place. With this story Plato would highlight the unjust nature of human beings if they could act without the censorship of laws.

            We have in the Gospel a type of “Gyges’ ring” that allows us to act without censorship and with complete freedom. However, this possibility, far from leading us to licentiousness, must promote the most genuine values: honesty, sincerity, prophetic boldness, altruism. . . God created us in his image and likeness and such a nature cannot bring selfish and evil fruits.

            Although the Word is a constant reminder that we are not perfect, it also strengthens our capacity for repentance, renewal, and forgiveness through this, and the closeness to God by following the light of His son, Jesus. Let us act naturally, and not out of fear of retribution, and may this sincerity allow us to be closer to those around us and to God.

 

Prayer: Lord, I am in your hands. Let me act according to your will, not out of fear of punishment, but out of love and eternal gratitude for the birth of your Son among us. Amen.

El anillo de Giges

Salmo 119

Dichosos los que guardan sus estatutos y de todo corazón lo buscan.

Salmo 119:2

            Platón, en el segundo libro de la República, nos narra la historia de Giges, un campesino que encuentra un anillo que le concede la cualidad de hacerse invisible. Así, un hombre hasta el momento justo, al verse con la posibilidad de estar al margen de la ley por su invisibilidad, incurre en hechos que le permitieron matar a su rey y tomar su lugar. Con esta historia Platón resaltaría la naturaleza injusta de los seres humanos si pudieran actuar sin la censura de las leyes.

            Nosotros tenemos en el Evangelio una especie de “anillo de Giges”, para actuar sin censuras y con completa libertad. Sin embargo, esta posibilidad,  lejos de conducirnos al libertinaje, debe promover los más genuinos valores: la honestidad, la sinceridad, la osadía profética, el altruismo… Dios nos creó a su imagen y semejanza y tal naturaleza no puede traer consigo frutos egoístas y malvados.

            Si bien la Palabra nos recuerda constantemente que no somos perfectos, también afianza en nosotros la capacidad de arrepentimiento, de renovación, de perdón. Y con esto, también la cercanía a Dios a través del seguimiento de la luz de su Hijo Jesús. Actuemos naturalmente y no por temor a represalias, y que esta sinceridad nos permita acercarnos más a nuestro prójimo y a Dios.

 

Oración: Señor, estoy en tus manos. Permíteme actuar según tu voluntad, no por temor al castigo, sino por amor y agradecimiento eterno ante el nacimiento de tu Hijo entre nosotros. Amén.
