THE TRUE JESUS

Mark 14:61b-62

Jesus said, “I am . . .”

Mark 14:62a (NRSV)

            Although he was the Son of God, he preferred to call himself the Son of Man because he had become human.

            He wasn’t a divine tourist. He worked as an artisan in the last village in the last country of the world. Then he went out to preach to sinners and to the “women of life,” and he was familiar with the peasants and the outcasts of his village. As leader of the masses he fired hope, taught dignity and liberation, brotherhood and love, loving his land on foot like a bedouin.

            He didn’t have two tunics nor a proper pillow when he laid his head down. He went hungry and thirsty, he begged, and exhaustion and sweat were a part of his life.

            Moreover he was an innovative man, breaking the taboos of segregation, ritualism and sabbath. All around him, he not only aroused love but also envy and hatred.

            And today, if Jesus were to return to the mines or to the suburbs of our cities, we would again take him to Calvary. But in reality, he is already back; the Son of Man is wherever there is a tear, a cry for death. He continues being crucified in the world.

 

Prayer: Lord, do not let us forget the teachings of the one who was nailed to the cross or turn our backs on the needy. Amen.

EL VERDADERO JESUS

Marcos 14:61b-62

Jesús le respondió: Yo soy…

Marcos 14:62a

Aunque era Hijo de Dios, le gustaba llamarse Hijo del Hombre, porque se había hecho humano.

            No era un turista divino. Trabajó como artesano en el último pueblo del último país del mundo. Luego salió a predicar a los pecadores y a las mujeres de la vida, y se tuteó con los campesinos y los parias de su pueblo. Como líder de masas encendió la esperanza, enseñó la dignidad y la liberación, la hermandad y el amor, amando su tierra a pie como un beduino.

            No tuvo dos túnicas ni una almohada propia donde reclinar la cabeza. Pasó hambre y sed, pidió prestado, y el cansancio y el sudor fueron parte de su vida.

            También fue un hombre innovador, rompió los tabúes de la segregación, el ritualismo y el sábado. A su alrededor, no sólo suscitó el amor, sino también despertó envidia y odio.

            Y si hoy Jesús volviese a las minas o a los suburbios de nuestras ciudades, le volveríamos a subir al Calvario. Pero, en realidad, ya ha vuelto, el Hijo del Hombre está dondequiera hay una lágrima, un grito a la muerte. Él sigue siendo crucificado en el mundo.

 

Oración: Señor, no nos dejes olvidarnos de las enseñanzas del que fuera clavado en la cruz ni dar la espalda al necesitado. Amén.
