THE MOST ESSENTIAL

Psalm 42:1-11

As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.

            Water can be described as a colorless, odorless and tasteless element which takes up three quarters of the universe and which as a chemical can be summed up in the letters: H₂O.

            Some weeks ago I saw a video about an African desert. I was impressed by the role that water plays, not only in the survival of the human species, but in the balance of the different species of animals.  My attention was called to the fact that an animal can die of thirst only a few steps from a spring because a stronger “chief of the group” prevents access to the same. The Psalmist uses a well known figure of speech in the interest of more easily reaching his listeners. His depression was caused by the impossibility of going on a pilgrimage and worshiping God at the Temple. His Psalm shows the anxiety of not being able to establish and strengthen communion with his brothers and of all of them with God.

            Following his line of thought, we can say that he compares water, an essential element for life, with communion, an element no less essential for the growth of the believer.

            Without going around in circles, we can ask a question: Do we prioritize communion with our brothers and sister and of all with God? May our desire to participate in the communion that Church offers be as strong as the bellowing of the servant for water.

 

Prayer: You are my all, Lord, you are my living water. Amen.

LO MÁS INDISPENSABLE

Salmo 42:1-11

Como el ciervo brama por las corrientes de las aguas, así clama por ti, oh Dios, el alma mía.

Salmo 42:1

            El agua se puede definir como un elemento incoloro, inodoro e insípido que ocupa las tres cuartas partes del universo y que un químico resumiría en pocas letras: H₂O.

            Hace algunas semanas vi un video sobre un desierto en África. Me impresionó el papel que juega el agua, no ya en la supervivencia del género humano, sino en el equilibrio de las diferentes especies de animales. Me llamó la atención que un animal puede morir de sed, a unos pies de un manantial, porque uno más poderoso, “jefe del grupo”, le impide el acceso al mismo. El salmista usa una figura bien conocida con el interés  de llegar más fácilmente a sus interlocutores. Su depresión la causa la imposibilidad de peregrinar y asistir al Templo, para adorar a Dios. Su Salmo muestra la angustia por no poder establecer y fortalecer la comunión con sus hermanos, y de todos con Dios.

            Siguiendo su pensamiento podríamos decir que él compara el agua, elemento esencial para la vida, con la comunión, elemento no menos esencial para el crecimiento diario del creyente.

            Sin dar muchas vueltas nos podríamos hacer una pregunta: ¿Priorizamos la comunión con nuestros hermanos y de todos con Dios? Ojalá que nuestro deseo por participar de la comunión que nos ofrece el Templo sea tan fuerte como el bramido del siervo por el agua.
