A GOOD MAN

Luke 23:50-56

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilot for the body of Jesus. Now, Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilot’s permission, he came and took the body away. (NIV)

At certain moments of desperation, we are accustomed to take heart for those things that we can’t commonly imagine. There are people who commit truly heroic acts when they find themselves placed between a rock and a hard place. 

Joseph of Arimathea did something similar. He found commonality with Jesus; he found in him what he sought to fully complete his life. But, as all things tend to have a “but,” he was afraid to confess himself as Jesus’ follower. The legal pressure of the institution to which he belonged, his social position, his reputation, and perhaps his family situation all interposed between him and the public confession of the one called Messiah. It was precisely the horrible death on the cross that made Joseph of Arimathea a courageous man, a disciple who gave open testimony in favor of a despised person. And, for the record, his action was really dangerous: giving burial to a condemned and executed man, he made himself susceptible and perhaps even condemnable.

Since then, the death of Jesus and his resurrection have constantly worked the miracle of transforming people. In every new transformation there’s a new step of service and love that the followers of Jesus take. 

 

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for the lives of so many men and women who teach us that, at every moment, we should follow you, the God of life. Amen.

UN HOMBRE DE BIEN

Lucas 23:50-56

José, el de Arimatea, pidió permiso a Pilato para llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús... Pilato le dio permiso, y José fue y se llevó el cuerpo.

En ciertos momentos de desesperación solemos tomar coraje para esas coas que comúnmente ni nos imaginaos. Hay personas que realizan verdaderos actos heroicos cuando se ven puestas entre la espada y la pared.

Algo así fue lo que hizo José de Arimatea. Simpatizaba con Jesús, había encontrado en Él lo que buscaba para realizar plenamente su vida. Pero, como todas las cosas suelen tener un pero, tenía miedo de confesarse como su seguidor. La presión legal de la institución a la que pertenecía, su posición social, su reputación, quizás su situación familiar, todo esto se interponía entre él y la confesión pública en aquel al que llamaban Mesías. Fue precisamente la muerte horrible en la  cruz la que hizo de José de Arimatea un hombre de coraje, un discípulo que dio testimonio abierto en favor de un despreciado. Y  conste que su acción realmente era peligrosa: al dar sepultura a un condenado y ejecutado se hacía sospechoso y acaso también él mismo condenable.

Desde entonces la muerte de Jesús y su resurrección han obrado constantemente el milagro de transformar a las personas, en cada nueva transformación hay un nuevo paso de servicio y amor que dan los seguidores de Jesús.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, por la vida de tantos hombres y mujeres que nos enseñan que debemos, en todo momento, seguirte a ti, el Dios de la vida. Amén.
