TWO TRAITORS

John 13:21-38

I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.

Peter and Judas are two traitors, but with different endings. Peter was weak; he was overcome by fear. But Peter recognized his guilt and wept for his sin. For Peter his sin wasn’t the end, but rather the beginning of a new life, more full of love for the Teacher. Judas is with Jesus, too, but ruminating on his betrayal, he will seek out the enemy, will haggle over the price, and, having collected the thirty coins, he hands him over. With Judas, Jesus’ work of salvation fails, because Judas did not accept him.

In betrayal we are like them. How many times, like Peter, in moments of enthusiasm and fervor, have we promised the Lord love and loyalty forever? “Never again, Lord, to offend you or turn our backs on you…” But then temptation came, difficulty, fear of the consequences of our actions, of acting against the tide, of renouncing pleasure or well-being, and we betrayed him… And, like Judas, have we not sold out the Lord in exchange for anything? If like Judas or Peter, you are tempted to betray the Lord, pray that his Love will draw you back to Him.

 

Prayer: Lord, hold out your hand to me and help me not to feel tempted to betray you. Amen.

DOS TRAIDORES

Juan 13:21-38

¡A todo el que me reconozca en público aquí en la tierra, el Hijo del Hombre también lo reconocerá en presencia de los ángeles de Dios!

Lucas 12:8

Pedro y Judas son dos traidores, pero con finales distintos. Pedro fue débil, le venció el miedo. Pero reconoció su culpa y lloró su pecado. Para Pedro su pecado no fue el final, sino el comienzo de una vida nueva más plena de amor al Maestro. Judas está con Jesús también; pero rumiando la traición. Buscará a los enemigos. Regateará el precio. Y, cobradas las treinta monedas, lo entregó. Con Judas fracasa la obra de salvación de Jesús, porque Judas no lo aceptó.

En la traición nosotros somos como ellos. Cuántas veces, como Pedro, en momentos de entusiasmo y fervor, hemos prometido al Señor amor y fidelidad para siempre: “Ya nunca más, Señor, ofenderte, volverte la espalda…” Pero llegó la tentación, la dificultad, el miedo a las consecuencias de nuestros actos, a obrar contra corriente, a la renuncia del placer o del bienestar, y le traicionamos... Y, como Judas, ¿no hemos vendido al Señor a cambio de cualquier cosa? Si como Judas o Pedro eres tentado a traicionar al Señor, ruega para que su Amor te atraiga de nuevo hacia Él.

 

Oración. Señor, tiéndeme tu mano y ayúdame para que no me sienta tentado a traicionarte. Amén.
