DEATH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST
Matthew 14: 1-12
on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Matthew 14:3-4 (NRSV)
After Herod divorced his wife and Herodias divorced Herod's brother Philip, the two were married. To marry a brother's wife was to go against Jewish Law. Not only was that marriage politically imprudent, but religiously it was a scandal, and John's loud condemnation was damaging to his reputation especially among the Jews and a threat to their political security.
We live in convulsive times with epidemics, wars, climate change, divided families, and many other situations. Many are ignored, others are silenced. Money, power, and influence weigh on a world of interest. The prophet Jeremiah and John the Baptist spoke in God’s name. They had the same fate.
Truth is uncomfortable. Jesus will suffer the same fate. It will be the fate of witnesses in every time. Nevertheless the burning chain of hope will never be extinguished. There are always those who take up the baton and continue to raise banners of justice, love and peace.
Prayer: Lord, may we not lack, as in the relay race, those who take the torch and hand it to others so that they continue running.

ASESINATO DE JUAN EL BAUTISTA
Mateo 14: 1-12
