SYMBOLIC ACTION OF THE POTTER WITH THE CLAY

Jeremiah 18: 1-6

Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand,

Jeremiah 18:6 (NRSV)

In the biblical text we cite today, Jeremiah goes to the house of the potter and watches him at work.  The potter, not satisfied with the vessel that he is working on, breaks it and makes another with the same clay. The Lord then announces that, like the potter, he is free to change his plans for his people and that, although he has formed a plan to judge them, still, if they repent, they have time to avoid disaster. A belated repentance will be honored by God.

In several places in the Bible the comparison with the potter serves to express that God is the absolute master and directs everyone’s lives according to his will.

Here, the same comparison serves to give another teaching which completes the first: that humans are free. The Bible maintains these two affirmations: that nothing escapes God’s control, and that we are free.

 

Prayer: Lord, never let us forget that you are always at work in our lives and that we can always trust that you are shaping us so that we can fulfill the purpose for which you created us.

ACCIÓN SIMBÓLICA DEL ALFARERO Y EL BARRO

Jeremías 18: 1-6

Ustedes son en mis manos lo mismo que el barro en manos del alfarero.

Jeremías 18:6

En el texto bíblico que hoy citamos, Jeremías va a casa del alfarero y lo observa trabajando. El alfarero descontento con el vaso que está haciendo lo rompe y hace otro con el mismo barro. El Señor entonces declara que, como el alfarero, Él está libre de revisar sus intenciones para con su pueblo y que, aunque Él se ha formado un plan para juzgarlo, todavía, si ellos se arrepienten, hay tiempo para evitar el desastre. Un arrepentimiento tardío será honrado por Dios.

En varios lugares de la Biblia la comparación del alfarero sirve para expresar que Dios es dueño absoluto y conduce a su voluntad la vida de todos.

Aquí, la misma comparación sirve para dar otra enseñanza que completa la primera: que el hombre es libre. La Biblia mantiene estas dos afirmaciones: Que a Dios nada se le escapa, y que somos libres.

 

Oración: Señor, que nunca olvidemos que Tú siempre obras en nuestras vidas y que confiemos siempre que nos irás moldeando para que podamos cumplir con el propósito por el cual nos creaste. Amén.
