THE GREATEST IN THE KINGDOM

Matthew 18:1-5; 10

Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:4 (NRSV)

If we ask about the qualities of a child, we will always know what to say: happy, trusting, innocent, fragile, affectionate. Children forget offenses between them; friendship is stronger. That’s how we once were, and we change bit by bit. There were those who were fortunate enough to maintain some of those qualities, but in general we have grown up in an environment contrary to how we were born, from the mother who says, “do not share your snack,” to the violence and mistreatment that our children experience daily.

But, my brothers and sisters, in Jesus Christ we have the chance to return to our purer sentiments: love, forgiveness, sharing, serving others. Jesus asks us to humble ourselves, which is not about not valuing ourselves, but about putting others before ourselves. Thus may we be able to enter and be a part of building God’s Reign.

 

Prayer: Eternal Father, give us a child’s heart in order to love and serve like them. Amen.

EL MAYOR DEL REINO

Mateo 18:1-5; 10

Cualquiera que se humilla como este niño, ese será el mayor del Reino de los Cielos.

Mateo 18:4

Si preguntamos las cualidades de un niño, sabremos siempre decir: alegre, confiado, inocente, débil, cariñoso. Los niños olvidan ofensas entre ellos, la amistad puede más. Así fuimos nosotros un día. Y cambiamos poco a poco. Hubo quienes tuvieron la dicha de mantener algunas de esas cualidades, pero en general hemos crecido en un medio contrario a como nacimos, desde la madre que dice: “tu merienda no la compartas’’, hasta violencias y malos tratos que recién nuestros infantes a diario.

Pero mis hermanos y hermanas, tenemos la oportunidad en Cristo Jesús de volver a nuestros más puros sentimientos: amar, perdonar, compartir, servir a los demás. Jesús nos pide humillarnos, que no es no valorarnos, sino poner a los demás primero que nosotros. Así podremos entrar, ser parte y construir el Reino de Dios.

 

Oración: Padre eterno, danos un corazón de niño, para amar y servir como ellos. Amén.
