WHAT DOES THE QUARTER LEAVE US WITH?

II Corinthians 4:13-18

And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith.

1 John 5:4 (NRSV)

             The quarter closes with this final meditation. What have the more than ninety reflections of these last three months left in our lives? Assuredly we have read them in the midst of daily life’s complexities, and on occasion with the sad experiences of illness, pain and hardship – especially because of the reality of the Coronavirus epidemic.

            But that’s life, the Christian life immersed in the every day. The knowledge of Christ, the encounter with Him, that impassions and strengthens existence, does not exempt us from the realities that every person faces. Neither does it encourage you to live in isolation to escape the ups and downs of life as if it were only for personal enjoyment. On the contrary, we understand by the light of Christian faith that the world is also our parish.

             It is also to be assumed that on every page of Su Voz, we have had a friend who has enjoyed with us the security, joy, and pleasure of the Christian faith to make eternal times out of  this earthly life. As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.” (2 Cor 4:17-18)

 

Prayer: O God of mercy and love, we thank you for the readings of this devotional which always fill our lives and nourish us with piety and wisdom. Amen.

¿QUE NOS DEJA EL TRIMESTRE?

II CORINTIOS 4:13-18

“Y esta es la victoria que ha vencido al mundo”

1ra de Juan 5:4

             Se cierra el trimestre con esta última meditación. ¿Qué ha dejado en nuestras vidas las más de noventa reflexiones de esta época del año? Seguramente las hemos leído en medio de las complejidades del diario vivir, y en ocasiones con las tristes experiencias de enfermedades, dolores y penas; en especial tras la realidad de la epidemia del Coronavirus.

             Pero eso es la vida, la vida del cristiano inmerso en el cada día. El conocimiento de Cristo, el encuentro con Él, que apasiona y fortalece la existencia, no nos  exime de las realidades que toda persona afronta. Tampoco te incita a vivir aislado para huir de los vaivenes de la vida como si fuera solo para disfrute personal. Por el contrario, entendemos a la luz de la fe cristiana que el mundo es también nuestra parroquia.

             También es de suponer que en cada página de Su Voz, hemos tenido un amigo o amiga que ha disfrutado  con nosotros de la seguridad, del gozo y la complacencia de la fe cristiana para hacer los tiempos eternos desde esta vida terrenal. Como refirió el apóstol Pablo a los corintios: “...lo que sufrimos en esta  vida es cosa ligera que pronto pasa, pero que nos trae como resultado una gloria eterna mucho más grande y abundante”, porque no nos fijamos en lo que se ve, sino en lo que no se ve, ya que las que se ven son pasajeras, pero las que no se ven son eternas.

 

Oración: Gracias Oh Dios de misericordia y de amor, por las lecturas de este devocionario. Que siempre llenen nuestras vidas y nos nutran de piedad y sabiduría. Amén.

FULL MOON: A BEAUTIFUL CREATION OF GOD

Genesis 1:1-4, 14-18

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness

John 8:12a (NRSV)

             The sun and the moon are part of God’s creation providing us with light and warmth. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” If we accept Jesus as our savior, we receive his light. The moon has no light of its own; its light is from the sun which it reflects.

             If we accept Jesus as our savior, we receive his light and we reflect it to those around us. We do not have our own light; our light is the light of Jesus.

             Let us ask God our savior that on receiving his light we may reflect it to others bearing his message of salvation, peace, and love. May the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit help us to carry his message of consolation and mercy through his light.

             As the moon shines on beautiful nights, let us shine with the light received from Jesus to those around us, and they thus receive love, joy, peace, and mercy.

 

Prayer: Our God and good Father, help us always to bear your light to other people we do not know. Amen.

LUNA LLENA: BELLA CREACIÓN DE DIOS.

GÉNESIS 1:1-4, 14-18

Yo soy la luz que alumbra a todos los que viven en este mundo. 

Juan 8:12a

             El sol y la luna son parte de la creación de Dios, nos proporcionan luz y calor. Jesús dijo: Yo soy la luz del mundo, si aceptamos a Jesús como nuestro salvador, recibimos su luz. La luna no tiene luz propia, su luz es la del sol que ella refleja.

             Si nosotros aceptamos a Jesús como nuestro salvador recibimos su luz y la reflejamos a nuestros semejantes. Nosotros no tenemos luz propia, nuestra luz es la luz de Jesús.

             Pidamos a Dios nuestro salvador que al recibir su luz la reflejemos a otros llevando su mensaje de salvación, paz y amor. Que el amor de Dios y la comunión del espííritu santo nos ayuden a llevar su mensaje de consolación y misericordia mediante su luz.

             Como la luna que alumbra en las noches hermosas alumbremos con la luz recibida de Jesús a quienes nos rodean, y que así reciban amor, gozo, paz y misericordia.

 

Oración: Nuestro Dios y buen padre ayúdanos siempre a llevar tu luz a otras personas que no te conocen. Amén.

RUTH ACCOMPANIES NAOMI

Ruth 1: 8-18

your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

 Ruth 1: 16 b (NRSV)

             Ruth lived in Moab located at the southern tip of the Dead Sea. She became part of a family from Bethlehem in the territory of Judah. This family came to Moab because there was great need in Bethlehem, and Moab did not lack for food. The father died shortly after arriving in Moab. The sons also died and left only Naomi with her two Moabite daughters-in-law.

             Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem and told her two daughters-in-law to return to their own families. Naomi convinced Orpah who returned to her family, but Ruth was unwilling and decided to go with her mother-in-law to Bethlehem. On arriving, they had many difficulties as single women, but Ruth is determined to find sustenance and decides to go to the harvest and pick the sheaves of grain left in the field by the harvesters.  Thus begins the story of her meeting Boaz, a wealthy man and a distant relative of her mother-in-law. In the end Ruth and Boaz marry and have a son, Obed. Thus, like Rahab, Ruth forms part of the genealogy of Jesus. (See Matthew 1:5)

             God blesses behaviors like those of Ruth, gives us strength, and teaches love and faithfulness to our family and neighbors

 

Prayer: Loving Father, as Ruth accompanied Naomi in her journey, let us be able to love our neighbor unconditionally. Amen.

RUT ACOMPAÑA A NOEMÍ

Rut 1: 8-18

Tu pueblo será mi pueblo y tú Dios será mi Dios...

Rut 1: 16 b

             Rut vivía en Moab, situada en el extremo meridional del Mar Muerto. Llegó a formar parte de una familia procedente de Belén, territorio de Judá. Vino esta familia a Moab, ya que en Belén habían grandes necesidades y en Moab no faltaban los alimentos. El padre fallece poco tiempo después de la llegada a Moab, Mueren también los hijos y queda sola Noemí con sus dos nueras moabitas.

             Noemí decide regresarse a Belén y les dice a sus nueras que vuelvan con sus familias. Noemí convence a Orfa, que regresa con su familia, pero Rut no acepta, decide acompañar a su suegra hasta Belén. Al llegar pasan muchas necesidades, como mujeres solas, pero Rut se empeña en buscar el sustento, y se  decide ir a las cosechas a recoger las espigas dejadas en el campo. Ahí comienza la historia donde conoce a Booz, hombre rico, pariente lejano de su suegro. Al final, se casa Rut con Booz y tienen un hijo: Obed. Así como Rahab, Rut forma parte de la genealogía de Jesús (ver Mateo 1:5).

             Dios bendice comportamientos como los de Rut; nos da valor y nos enseña el amor y la fidelidad a nuestra familia y a nuestros semejantes.

 Oración: Amante Padre, así como Rut acompañó a Noemí en su peregrinar, permite que podamos nosotros amar a nuestro prójimo incondicionalmente. Amén.

DOERS OF THE FATHER’S WILL

Matthew 21:28-32

Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life.

Ezekiel 18:27 (NRSV)

             Jesus had just accomplished the “purification of the Temple.” In the episode the immediately followed, the high priests and elders asked Jesus “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” (21:23) His response was another question: “. . . Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” They didn’t dare answer, and Jesus told them the parable of a father and his two sons.

             “Which of the two did the will of his father?” (21:31) The grumpy and ill-mannered son who ended up doing what he was asked to do or the kind and smiling son who does whatever he wants? The response was easy: the first.

             Jesus draws from it an amazing consequence. It’s preferable to live badly, if in the end you do what God desires, than to live an apparently pious life and refuse to fulfill his will. Said in the crude words of the gospel, it better to be a prostitute or a thief, if eventually you convert, than to belong to whatever religious organization or institution and be unable to convert. Conversion implies working with the Father in the establishment of the Kingdom of justice, peace, and love for all of creation.

 

Prayer: O God, allow that we may always be ready to do your will, to be your hands and your voice in our midst. Amen.

HACEDORES DE LA VOLUNTAD DEL PADRE

Mateo 21:28-32

“Si el malvado se aparta de su maldad y se apega al derecho y a la justicia, habrá salvado su vida””

Ezequiel 18:27

             Jesús acababa de realizar la “purificación del templo”. En el episodio inmediatamente anterior, los sumos sacerdotes y los senadores, preguntan a Jesús con qué autoridad actuaba así. Él les responde con otra pregunta: -¿El bautismo de Juan era cosa de Dios o cosa humana? No se atreven a contestar, y Jesús les cuenta esta parábola de un padre y sus dos hijos.

            ¿Quién cumple la voluntad del padre?, ¿el hijo protestón y maleducado que termina haciendo lo que le piden, o el hijo amable y sonriente que hace lo que le da la gana? La respuesta es fácil: el primero.

             Jesús saca de ella una consecuencia asombrosa. Es preferible vivir de mala manera, si al final haces lo que Dios quiere, que vivir de forma aparentemente piadosa y negarse a cumplir su voluntad. Dicho con las palabras crudas del evangelio: es preferible ser prostituta o ladrón, si al final te conviertes, que pertenecer a cualquier organización o institución religiosa y ser incapaz de convertirte. La conversión implica laborar con el Padre en la instauración del Reino de justicia, paz y amor para con toda la creación.

 

 Oración: Permite, oh Dios, que estemos siempre dispuestos a hacer tu voluntad, a ser tus manos y tu voz en medio nuestro. Amén.

THEY FOLLOWED HIM

Matthew 20: 29-34

Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.

             Often when we do something for someone else, we are left waiting for these words: “Thank you!”

             There were two blind men who wanted to make their presence stand out before the Master; apparently they knew about him, and perhaps had heard talk of his love for those with physical difficulties. The text says that the crowd wanted to silence them so that they couldn’t bother Jesus; they wanted them to remain mute, but the blind men insisted. Jesus was moved to compassion and listened to them. It was a brief conversation: “What do you want me to do for you?” “We want our eyes to be opened.” Immediately, their eyes were opened and when they had recovered their sight, they followed him. This action constitutes a form of thanks for what had been done for them.

             Jesus has given us much more than sight; he has given us salvation by means of his sacrifice on the cross. I believe we must be as grateful as those two men and follow him.

 

Prayer: My Lord Jesus, I am thankful for all you do for me. I want to follow you, I want to walk with you. Thank you Lord. Amen.

LE SIGUIERON

MATEO 20: 29-34

“… tocó los ojos de ellos, y al instante recobraron la vista,

y le siguieron”

Mateo 20:34

            Muchas veces cuando hacemos algo en favor de alguien, nos hemos quedado en espera de una de esas palabras: “!gracias!”.

             Eran dos hombres que estaban ciegos, querían resaltar su presencia ante el Maestro,  al parecer le conocían, tal vez habían oído hablar de su amor por aquellos que tenían dificultades físicas; dice el texto que los de la multitud quisieron callarles para que no molestaran a Jesús, les preferían mudos, pero ellos insistían, Jesús se movió por compasión y les atendió. Fue una pequeña conversación: “¿Qué desean que haga por ustedes?”  -“Deseamos que nuestros ojos sean abiertos”. Y de inmediato los ojos le fueron abiertos y cuando recobraron la vista, dice el texto que le siguieron; esta acción constituye una forma de agradecimiento por lo que había hecho por ellos.

             Jesús nos ha dado mucho más que la vista, nos ha dado la salvación mediante el sacrificio de la cruz, creo que debemos ser agradecidos al igual que estos dos hombres y seguirle.

 

Oración: Mi Señor Jesús, yo estoy agradecido por todo lo que haces por mí, quiero seguirte, quiero andar contigo.  Gracias Señor. Amén.
