The third Sunday of Advent

GOOD NEWS

Isaiah 61:1-3

“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (NIV)

Luke 4:21b

            Isaiah’s prophecy contains an enormous reference to the work and life of the Messiah. The early Christians found reference to argue about Jesus as the Christ based in “the Scriptures” in this book Some commentators, therefore, call it the “gospel” according to Isaiah.  According to the text, the arrival of the Messiah, that yearned for anointed one, would be to proclaim the good news to the afflicted, to bring liberation, to announce God’s saving good will.   

            On beginning his ministry Jesus arrives in Nazareth, and there in the synagogue reads this text. What happens next leaves everyone astonished, since Jesus declares that the prophesy has exactly come to pass in him. Such a statement was too much for his countrymen. It’s difficult to be a prophet in one’s own land.           

            And today, upon announcing Advent, the arrival of Christ from God, in what way does it become good news for those who hear us? Can they see in us a reflection of that Jesus we must announce?

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, you always come, and we are called to be witnesses of that liberating arrival. Train us to be carriers of the good news. Amen.

Tercer domingo de Adviento

BUENAS NOTICIAS

Isaías  61:1-3

Hoy se ha cumplido esta Escritura delante de ustedes

Lucas 4:21b

            La profecía  de Isaías contiene una enorme referencia a la obra y la vida del Mesías. En este libro encontraron los primeros cristianos un potente referente para argumentar sobre Jesús como el Cristo basados en “las Escrituras”. Algunos comentaristas le llaman por eso el “evangelio” según Isaías.

            La llegada del Mesías, ese Ungido anhelado, sería, según el texto, para proclamar una buena noticia a los afligidos, para traer liberación, para anunciar esa buena voluntad salvífica de Dios.

            Jesús, al comenzar su ministerio, llega a Nazaret, y allí lee en la sinagoga este texto. Lo que sucede a continuación deja a todos atónitos, pues Jesús declara que la profecía ha llegado a su cumplimiento cabal en él. Resultó demasiado tal afirmación para sus coterrááneos, difícil ser profeta en la tierra propia.

            Y hoy, al anunciar el adviento, la llegada del Cristo de Dios, ¿de qué modo se convierte en buena noticia para quienes nos oyen? ¿Pueden ver en nosotros un reflejo de ese Jesús al que debemos anunciar?

 

Oración: Padre amado, tú vienes siempre, y nosotros somos llamados a ser testigos de esa venida liberadora. Capacítanos para ser  portadores de la buena nueva. Amén.
