the portrait of god

John 14:7-14

…Whoever has seen me has seen the father….

What is God like?  For some this is a question without an answer while for others it continues to be a mystery like those abstract paintings in the art galleries.  But Jesus shows us a God with bright and varied color: in his arms which carried children, in his tears before the tomb of Lazarus, in his patience with the impulsive Peter.

Today we could say that Jesus is the “portrait in motion” of the Father.  When he healed a marginalized leper, he revealed the compassionate heart of God.  When he defended the adulteress, he showed the merciful justice of the Father. Even on the cross, with his arms open, he painted us the clearest picture of divine love.

Prayer:  Father, at times we imagine you as a severe judge or a distant watchman.  Help us to remove these false faces that we have created.  May every page of the Gospel be like a mirror where we see your true character reflected in Jesus. Amen.

El retrato de Dios

Juan 14:7-14

El que me ha visto a mí, ha visto al Padre.

¿Cómo es Dios? Para algunos es una pregunta sin respuestas, para otros sigue siendo un misterio como esos cuadros abstractos que vemos en las galerías de arte.  Pero Jesús nos muestra a Dios con colores vivos y disímiles: en sus brazos que cargaban niños, en sus lágrimas ante la tumba de Lázaro, en su paciencia con Pedro el impulsivo. 

Hoy podríamos decir que Jesús es el "retrato en movimiento" del Padre. Cuando sanaba a un leproso marginado, revelaba el corazón compasivo de Dios. Cuando defendía a la mujer adúltera, mostraba la justicia misericordiosa del Padre. Incluso en la cruz, con sus brazos abiertos, nos pintó el cuadro más claro del amor divino. 

Oración:  Padre, a veces te imaginamos como un juez severo o un relojero distante. Ayúdanos a quitarte esos rostros falsos que hemos creado. Que cada página del Evangelio sea como un espejo donde veamos reflejado tu verdadero carácter en Jesús. Amén.
