BE GENEROUS

Matthew 5:43-48

…so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both the evil and the good and sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous.

One of the fundamental practices of Christian life is to be generous. Generosity is one of the virtues that characterize our imitation of Christ–it identifies us with Him. So then, generosity is not simply wanting to give to others, but rather the authentic decision to love and to give of oneself. What virtue or gift would exist without love? It is impossible to demarcate or separate generosity from love.

This intimate union certainly is reflected in the life of Jesus, and in the love God has for every human being. The ability to give oneself to Christ is given by our Lord. He is the key to love and authentic generosity. It is impossible to love and be generous without personal cost. At Jesus’ level, love is capable of breaking down selfishness.

When we open our hearts to all who are around us, priorities change and so does our understanding of reality. We are no longer satisfied with a little bit of love, we love with the same generosity that God loves us.

Prayer: Lord, teach us to love with generosity as you have loved us. Amen.

SER GENEROSOS

Mateo 5:43-48

Para que seáis hijos de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos, que hace salir su sol sobre malos y buenos, y que hace llover sobre justos e injustos.

Una de las prácticas fundamentales de la vida cristiana es ser generosos. La generosidad es una de las virtudes que caracteriza nuestra imitación de Cristo, nos identifica con Él. Así pues, la generosidad, no es simplemente querer dar a los demás, más bien, la autenticidad de decidir amar y entregarse. ¿Qué virtud o don puede existir sin amor? Imposible deslindar o separar la generosidad del amor.

Esta unión íntima se refleja ciertamente en la vida de Jesús, en el amor que Dios tiene por cada ser humano. El darse de Cristo lo hace nuestro Señor. Él es la clave del amor y la auténtica generosidad. Es imposible amar y ser generoso si no es a costa de uno mismo. El amor, a la altura de Jesús, es capaz de ir quebrando los egoísmos.

Cuando abrimos el corazón a todo lo que nos rodea, las prioridades cambian y también nuestra comprensión de la realidad. Ya no nos conformamos con amar poquito, amamos con la generosidad que Dios nos ama.

Oración: Señor, enséñanos a amar con generosidad como tú nos amas. Amén.
