CARRYING THE CROSS

Matthew 16: 24-28

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

For us today, the cross is not a means of torture as it was for him. Today, we identify the cross with our burdens, problems, difficulties, needs.  And although there are many things, nothing compares to his death. Nevertheless, carrying our cross and following him is a great challenge.

We are living in a consumer society in which every day brings out the worst in human beings. The increasingly harsh economic situation in our country, has hardened hearts. It has changed humanity into egotistic people who look only to their well-being and that of those closest to them.

Following Jesus means being at the forefront of effort and dedication. It is loving and accepting ourselves as we are, and then projecting that love toward others. It’s sharing what we have and not what we have left over, even if we know we may lack it later, because we are certain that God provides for our needs. It is accompanying and encouraging along the way, sometimes supporting us and other times being the cane.

Prayer: Good God, teach us to follow your steps. Amen.

CARGANDO CON LA CRUZ

Mateo 16: 24-28

“Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, y tome su cruz y sígame”

Para nosotros hoy la cruz no es un medio de tortura como sí lo fue para Él. Hoy identificamos la cruz con nuestras cargas, problemas, dificultades, necesidades. Y aunque son muchas cosas, nada es comparable con su muerte. Sin embargo, tomar nuestra cruz y seguirle es un gran desafío.

Estamos viviendo en una sociedad de consumo que cada día saca lo peor del ser humano. La situación económica de nuestro país, cada vez más recrudecida, ha endurecido los corazones. Ha convertido a la humanidad en personas egoístas, que miran solo por su bienestar y el de las personas más cercanas.

Seguir a Jesús es estar en la primera línea del esfuerzo y la dedicación. Es amarnos y aceptarnos como somos, para luego proyectar ese amor hacia los demás. Es compartir lo que tenemos y no lo que nos sobra, aunque sepamos que después nos puede faltar, porque tenemos la certeza de que Dios suple nuestras necesidades. Es acompañar, alentar en el camino. Algunas veces apoyarnos y otras ser el bastón.

Oración: Buen Dios, enséñanos a seguir tus caminos. Amén
