Who Will You Invite?

Luke 14:12-14

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

The table is a constant symbol in Jesus’ preaching. It is the place of opening spaces, of nourishing the spirit and the body. Also in our culture, it is natural to offer food, have guests at the table, and make room for others, as we say in Spanish, “echar agua a la sopa” (add water to the soup). The truth is that we still find it difficult to feel that the table should always have room for those who need it most.

Even today in the midst of shortages, we enjoy the table among friends, families, even neighbors, it makes no difference what is offered; what is important is the time together, the laughter, the stories, the company. At the same time, there are many people who not only can they not invite because they have nowhere to do so, or what to offer, but rather that there will never be options for invitations made by others, as they will never be able to reciprocate. It is precisely to them that we must today make room in our hearts, our churches, our lives, precisely to those who never will have the opportunity to invite us back, simply becaue they have lost everything. It is to them that Jesus sends us to give them the true meaning of his ethical approach. The question is Do we have a place for them at our tables? I hope so, because then our lives would be filled with joy.

Prayer: Our God, may I always have room at my table for those who need it most. Amen.

¿A quién invitaras?

Lucas 14:12-14

Más bien, cuando des un banquete, invita a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los cojos y a los ciegos.

Lucas 14.13

La mesa, es un símbolo constante en la predicación de Jesús. Es el lugar de abrir espacios, de acoger, de alimentar el espíritu y el cuerpo. Aunque en nuestra cultura, es natural, ofrecer comida, tener invitados a la mesa, abrir espacios “echar agua a la sopa” como decimos popularmente, lo cierto es que todavía, nos cuesta sentir que la mesa siempre debe tener espacio para quienes más lo necesitan.

Aun hoy en medio de las escaseces, disfrutamos la mesa entre amigos, familias, incluso vecinos, no importa tanto lo que se ofrece, importa mas el tiempo juntos, las risas, los cuentos, la compañía. Al mismo tiempo, a nuestro alrededor, hay muchas personas que no solo no pueden invitar porque no tiene donde, o que brindar, sino, que jamás serán opciones en invitaciones que hagan otros, pues nunca lo podrán reciprocar. Justo a ellas y a ellos es a quienes debemos abrir lugar hoy en nuestras meas, nuestros templos, nuestras vidas, justo a esos que nunca tendrán la oportunidad de invitarnos de vuelta, simplemente porque lo han perdido todo. Es hacia ellas y a ellos a quienes nos envía Jesús para darle el verdadero significado a su propuesta ética. La pregunta es ¿Tenemos lugar para ellas y ellos en nuestras mesas? Ojalá que si, pues es nuestra vida se llenaría de dicha.

Oración: Dios nuestro permite que siempre haya lugar en mi mesa para quienes mas lo necesitan. Amén
