The Cost of Discipleship

Luke 14:25-33

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it?

Every endeavor, every path we take in life, involves calculation, reflection, studying options, advantages, disadvantages, obstacles, challenges, etc. We Don’t undertake anything that hasn’t been previously studied and calculated above all so as not to fail in order to achievee results and good outcomes.

In the same way, we should reflect on and analyze our Christian life, our discipleship, which, although we arrive at it through conviction, we need to know what we have, what we can count on, and what we lack, so that our discipleship may bear the necessary fruit. At times we think that being a disciple of Jesus is only being part of a community, carrying out good works and reading the Scriptures. Without a doubt, a good disciple must strive daily to leave behind everything that prevents us from bearing a true witness, incorporating everything we need to be a good person and constantly struggle to not become intoxicated with the vices and miseries that abound all around us. We need to do the math: how far are we willing to change our lives, to be filled with kindness, to put aside rancor, egotism, material ambitions, to humanize our actions and thoughts and assume the responsibility that we have for those around us. We must calculate how far we are willing to carry the cross and truly follow Jesus.

Prayer: God, help me to take up my cross with conviction and serve you with dedication. Amen.

El precio del discipulado

Lucas 14, 25-33

Supongamos que alguno de ustedes quiere construir una torre. ¿Acaso no se sienta primero a calcular el costo para ver si tiene suficiente dinero para terminarla?

Lucas 14.28

Toda obra, todo camino, que emprendemos en la vida, implica un cálculo, una reflexión, estudiar opciones ventajas, desventajas, obstáculos, retos. Etc. No emprendemos nada, que no haya sido previamente estudiado y calculado, sobre todo para no fallar, para poder tener resultados y buenos frutos.

De igual manera deberíamos reflexionar, analizar, nuestra vida cristiana, nuestro discipulado, al cual, si bien llegamos, por vocación, necesitamos sabre que tenemos, con que contamos, que nos falta, para que nuestro discipulado de los frutos necesarios. A veces pensamos, que ser discípulo de Jesús, es solo asistir a una comunidad, realizar buenas obras, y leer las Escrituras. Sin embargo, un buen discípulo tiene que esforzarse día a día, por dejar atrás todo lo que le impida dar un verdadero testimonio, incorporar todo lo que necesite para ser un buen ser humano y batallar constantemente para no embriagarse de vicios y miserias que abundan a nuestro alrededor. Necesitamos hacer “el cálculo” de hasta donde tenemos disposición de transformar toda nuestra vida, de llenarse de bondad, desechar el rencor, los egoísmos, las ambiciones materiales, humanizar nuestros actos, nuestros pensamientos, y asumir la responsabilidad que tenemos con quienes nos rodean.  Debemos “calcular” hasta donde estamos dispuestos a llevar la cruz y seguir a Jesús verdaderamente. 

Oración: Dios ayúdame a tomar mi cruz con convicción y servirte con vocación. Amén
