International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

JESUS OUR ETERNAL COMPANION

Luke 21:5-11

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”

The temple that the disciples admired was not Solomon’s temple, destroyed by the Babylonians in the 7th century BC. This temple was built by Ezra after his return from exile in the 6^th century BC, desecrated by the Seleucids in the 2^nd century BC. It was reconsecrated by the Maccabees shortly thereafter and greatly expanded by Herod the Great over a period of forty-six years. It was a beautiful structure with a significant history, but Jesus said it would be completely destroyed. This happened in 70 AD when the Roman army burned Jerusalem.

Jesus did not abandon his disciples without first preparing them for the difficulties of the years to come. He warned them that false messiahs, natural disasters, and persecutions would come, but at the same time he assured them that he would be with them to protect them and make his Kingdom known through them. He promised them that he would return in power and glory to save them. Jesus’ warnings and promises to his disciples remain valid for us as we await his coming.

Prayer: Beloved Father, thank you for your promises of protection for us, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

JESUS NUESTRA ETERNA COMPAÑIA

Y a unos que hablaban de que el templo estaba adornado de hermosas piedras y ofrendas votivas, dijo: En cuanto a estas cosas que veis, días vendrán en que no quedará piedra sobre piedra, que no sea destruida.

El templo que los discípulos admiraban no era el de Salomón, destruido por los babilonios en el siglo VII a.C. Este templo lo construyó Esdras después de su regreso del exilio en el siglo VI a.C., profanado por los seléucidas en el siglo II a.C. Reconsagrado por los macabeos poco después y ampliado enormemente por Herodes el Grande en el lapso de cuarenta y seis años. Era una estructura hermosa, con una historia significativa, pero Jesús dijo que sería destruida totalmente. Esto sucedió en 70 d.C. cuando el ejército romano incendió Jerusalén.

Jesús no abandonó a sus discípulos sin antes prepararlos para las dificultades de los años venideros. Les puso al tanto de que vendrían falsos mesías, desastres naturales y persecuciones, pero al mismo tiempo les aseguró que El estaría con ellos para protegerlo y hacer que su Reino se conociera a través de ellos. Les prometió que regresaría en poder y gloria para salvarlos. Las advertencias de Jesús y sus promesas a los discípulos siguen vigentes para nosotros mientras esperamos su venida.
