The Compassion that Transforms

Mark 1:40-45

Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”.

Leprosy, more than a physical disease, was a symbol of social exclusion and rejection. No one would approach a leper, but Jesus breaks down the barriers of fear and tradition. Moved by compassion, he extends his hand, touches him, and heals him. This gesture reveals the heart of the gospel: Christ does not remain distant from our suffering but draws near to restore us. Jesus’ compassion is not a fleeting feeling, but a concrete action that restores dignity and life. The leper receives not only healing but also inclusion in the community.

As a church, this passage challenges us to imitate the Lord. Who have we considered “untouchable” in our society? Jesus’ love calls us to reach out, to touch with mercy, and to proclaim that in him there is cleansing and new life. Today, let us remember that we have all been touched by this transformative compassion. And just as we have been restored, we are called to be instruments of restoration for others.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to extend your love to those who suffer and to be witnesses of your grace in the midst of need. May we touch the lives that others reject, showing that in you there is hope and new life. Amen.

La Compasión que Transforma

Marcos 1, 40-45

Y Jesús, teniendo misericordia de él, extendió la mano y le tocó, y le dijo: Quiero, sé limpio

Marcos 1.41

La lepra, más que una enfermedad física, era símbolo de exclusión y rechazo social. Nadie se acercaba a un leproso, pero Jesús rompe las barreras del miedo y la tradición. Movido por compasión, extiende su mano, lo toca y lo sana. Este gesto revela el corazón del evangelio: Cristo no se mantiene distante de nuestra miseria, sino que se acerca para restaurarnos. La compasión de Jesús no es un sentimiento pasajero, sino una acción concreta que devuelve dignidad y vida. El leproso no sólo recibe salud, sino también inclusión en la comunidad.

Como iglesia, este pasaje nos desafía a imitar al Señor. ¿A quiénes hemos considerado “intocables” en nuestra sociedad? El amor de Jesús nos llama a extender la mano, a tocar con misericordia y a proclamar que en Él hay limpieza y nueva vida. Hoy, recordemos que todos hemos sido alcanzados por esa compasión transformadora. Y así como fuimos restaurados, estamos llamados a ser instrumentos de restauración para otros.

Oración: Señor Jesús, ayúdanos a extender tu amor a quienes sufren y a ser testigos de tu gracia en medio de la necesidad. Que podamos tocar las vidas que otros rechazan, mostrando que en Ti hay esperanza y vida nueva. Amén.
